i've used freebsd, openbsd and a few linux distributions. I think ubuntu makes things the easiest, but the packages are not as maintaned, and integrated into the operating system as with bsd. but I just want to get things done, and I don't care about watching things compile, or dealing with any issues.
I've found that the best tradeoff was using Ubuntu, if I have to install 7 applications, and it's just seven apt-get commands, to me that beats spending days compiling software, for a technical benefit no user or myself will ever or rarely notice.
sometimes I will grab the source to use the newest version, depending on the software, but I like and need to be efficient, so intalling the packages with ubuntu is nice, and always seemed to have the right software, and generally less hassles than bsd.

yeah I tried Hardy Heron. but I usually don't like to upgrade things, because updating has broken my system more than once.

Quake II is not 27 years old. I refuse to accept THAT much time has gone by.
