i need help with my mouse!

hi! okay, so i'm having a little mouse trouble. it's an optical mouse and i'm sorry, but i don't know the exact type or model of it, though it does say 'ibm' where i place my palm, if that helps, which i doubt. anyway, whenever i play, my mouse tends to randomly, for lack of the technical term, freak-out. it'll either spin me around or send my crosshair shooting up towards the upper right or left corners of the screen. this happens every time i play. this has never happened to me before when i used to play with my with three-button logitech mouse that used a ball instead of a laser. i know that this problem has probably already been discussed, so i'd like to apologize in advance for being lazy and not looking further than page two of this forum. buuuut any help at all is very much appreciated! thanks!

check for hair/dust in the laser area.  if there's any, remove it.  you may need tweezers &/or a needle/paper clip straightened.

What type of surface are you using the mouse on? Optical mice don't like shiney, reflective surfaces.

yeah, i asked my friend about it and he said i just needed a mouse pad, which i don't have. i've just been using it on my computer desk.          ahahahah but thank you both! (:

I posted a similar question not too long ago. You mentioned that you use the mouse directly on the desktop. Bingo. For some reason, the lamination on the top of most desk surfaces reflects the laser back causing optical feedback. The quickest way I've found to stop the "tilt-a-whirl" is to move my mouse in a clockwise circle a few times. Moving it counterclockwise doesn't seem to correct it. That may help you, I dunno. Perhaps your mouse freaks out in a different manner than mine does. The idea of using a mouse pad is a bad one... to me, at least. The area of a mousepad is not quite big enough for me, I prefer to have the whole desk to work with. I use the arrow keys for movement, which is more comfortable for my left hand AND it allows me to slide the keyboard to the left more giving me even MORE room on the desktop to move the mouse.

well, i don't really have a lot of time to correct it seeing as how most of the time my mouse decides to freak out is while i'm "in the heat of battle", which ultimately leads to my death. so, i'm kind of looking for a permanent fix rather than a quick one, and if a mouse pad is the answer, and it's only real restriction is room, i'll just make sure to get one of those jumbo mouse pads they give away for free at my dentist's office. (: and i toooootally use the arrow keys, too, and also slide my keyboard all the way to the left! that makes me smile knowing someone else plays similar to me! sadjfhjksd since we're talking about it anywaaaay...

A mouse pad works best for keeping the crud out of your optical mouse. The dirt seems to like the pad better than the mouse. I have cats and the mouse (Microsoft Optical) stays fairly clean.  I seldom have to pick the fuzz out of it. Conventional sized mousepad, increase mouse sensitivity if you find yourself picking it up a lot . De-lint the pad as needed. I like the black pads about 7 x 8 inch. I think they are $2 at Fry's. If even that price is high, there are usually free ones at swaps and shows with logos on them. You can always become a collector. Shiny tables or surfaces without an optical grain will make the mouse do strange things.

Quake 2 mouse pads are the best:


Especially if you're playing Quake.  They last the longest (that one lasted a little over 10 years) so they're really worth it imho.   :frag:on!
