Having your home broken into is an aweful feeling,  for weeks and weeks afterwards even.

Getting broken into is a horrible feeling. I chased off the guys who were in my house. The only time anything suspicious happened in that area. They guy was so startled by me barrelling up the stairs after him (I was passed out in the rec room downstairs) that when he turned to flee his untied airforce one's fell off his feet. I used them to mow my lawn until I finally tossed them out. the other guy, the driver got the handle end of an aluminum bat in the face courtesy of my brother. Cops came and took the guy to be processed where he ratted on his best friend. I I.D.'d the other punk and he demanded his shoes back. In front of the cops I told him he was lucky I didn't take away his ability to chew solid food for a few months had I got an hand on him. That hot-headed comment got me an uttering threats charge...pfft.

Sorry I don't have the article linked to where I read a little bit on "reasonable force" but I believe that cops look at it as what the homeowner thought would be reasonable force to protect the family/homestead. If I had that punk he would have been hurt. Bad.

I imagine in parts of Texas, the officer would have given you some privacy with the guy, and afterwards bandaged the wounds from his "accident".

I wish that had happened. It was handled by the RCMP. They are akin to your State Troopers but with fancier uniforms and no sense of anything. They have no humour, justice, and, most importantly, no personality. The Constable who handled the whole thing was a dick and actually looked like he wasn't going to do anything serious to the kids.
