What are these private messages to WallFly[BZZZ]

I was just wandering what these messages are for, are they for bot detection or something

I get alot of those too i donno how to send private message but those messages are ure game version , and ure opengl files i donno i get them also!!

Dont worry about it. Thoes are just standard in the background scans.
Everyone gets them on the server you just get used to it and phaze it out.
i think the console is testing for client versions, wall hacks, bots. There are so many different ways to cheat/hack so the admins are trying to exploit the bots in anyways possible. I still this this server has the better bot protection.

Is "gl_ztrick" considered a hack?  If so, it shouldn't be.  This is the kind of config setting that's been around since the beginning of the game's existence.  I don't even know what good it does anymore.  I believe its use was to give a little performance bump to the old Voodoo card users, back in the days of 20-30fps norms.  

I'm always experimenting with little config.cfg settings to see if I can detect any difference, gl_ztrick among them.  For all I know, it might hurt performance anymore. But I'd hate to be considered a "cheat" for using it.

I did get bumped off a server (kansas.net maybe?) for having gl_ztrick 1 in my config (which I had forgotten about).  Why is this a hack?  

If we want to have an even playing field --other than variables like ping and people's video cards, etc. --  then I guess no one should be able to change configs at all.  Otherwise, I'd say let's just stick to obvious and nefarious cheats, whatever they are (I don't even know what a wall hack is or how to do it, for example) and let people play with their own configs to their heart's desire.  

Unfortunately, I find my config tweaking has really revealed that the only problem I have is on the skill level...doh!  

If we are going to insist upon certain do's and don'ts, then they should be explicitly listed here in the forum.  

For example, put up a list of the variables that aren't permitted to be altered, etc.

i guess it all depends some people say when its enabled to 1 depending on there client/video card
they can see through walls.  lately it was just tested a few people responed back with it being 1 and quicly disconnected. some it was set to 0 and they played like nothing happend. but when your vid_ref is gl and you have z trick at 1 thats odd. i tried it myself and it didnt do anything to me at all. i couldnt see through walls.  Cold flo uses gl and he said with ztrick at 1 he could see through walls. if this is legit or no i have no idea. i suggest he post a screen shot up right when he echoes his client version
its not really something thats being enforced or whatever its just a test.
we have seen a few people with the gl clear 1 setting for the wall hack and as soon as you set it to 0 they cannot magically see anything anymore
so all of this is just echos in the background to test for things. nothing to be alamred about or accusing anyone of anything. I think the admins are doing a great job and have cut down the bot usage on this server to almost none. i think another thing they have planned in the future is testing for nose pakcs/spiked players/ ect ect.

Slikkster... gl_ztrick isn't itself considered a hack, no.

There are some seemingly innocuous settings (like gl_clear) that are perfectly legit normally... but are also used to enable certain cheats in hacked clients.  And something like gl_clear 1 is normally only useful when making maps, as I understand it... with a finished map gl_clear should not be needed and just adds unnecessary work for the graphics card... Although with modern cards' fillrates, it prolly wouldn't slow anything down.  But there's no "reason" to have it on, normally.  That doesn't mean people who have gl_clear 1 are cheating... unless they have a particular hacked client.

But we might investigate further upon seeing gl_clear 1 .... (for instance)

Thank you, I was just wandering because it only happens on this server.

Sometimes I see "couldn't exec rat.cfg" pop up, I know that's when there looking for bots.  You'll never have to worry about me using bots though, personally I don't see what the fun would be in doing so.

Hey Solo, just noticed you're in Stuart.  I have some relatives in Indiantown, and Stuart's about the closest real town to Indiantown, lol.  

Indiantown is one of those towns in Fla that has it's own telephone and power company, which limits internet options.  However, they finally offered DSL which makes a difference.

I grew up in Indiantown,  lived there ten years from '84-'94.  I used to go to a local video rental store once a week to rent some NES games, I wonder if it's still there?

Well, then I had to move to Stuart when parents got divorced in '94, in '96 had to move to Okeechobee, which is on north side of the lake.  After graduating from high school there in 2000, I hung around the house for about a year and in 2001 moved back to Stuart to live with my mother and to find a job.

Been here ever since, got Adelphia High Speed internet back in Febuary and have barely left my computer ever since.  I may switch to Bellsouth DSL though, because Adelphia doesn't let you run servers and I want to start my own Quake 2 server someday.  I could run one now but if they caught me they would shut off my service, plus I have dynamic IP, have to pay extra to get static IP.

I'm always tryin something new with configs myself. I got kicked off a couple servers using a cfg to do a rocket jump - seems some consider such stuff cheats.  I try to always be up front about the cfgs I use - I don't mind telling anyone I use aliases (macros to me) I can't use a mouse to play like most do - my wrists are almost immobile - so I use aliases to do things most people do without thought.

It probably wouldn't do me any good if I had hacks bots or whatever - you still have to be able to respond to the input  

Note to console - if you ever detect anything I'm using as a "cheat" be sure and let me know - I will most happily attempt another way to do whatever it is that is flagged....

Yes I can see through walls with gl_ztrick 1 but it does hurt my performance and is only helpful on very large maps where u run into few players or if there is a wide open space with columns in the way so u can tell which way they will dart from the column.  I have never won with it in here, and when i have used it, which was only early in the morning, I could see that the other player was using it too.  I suspect that many upper players like to use it against the likes of me.  I really have little experience with it and a witch hunt of me might prove your own ends but i think this problem is more rampant than maybe u know or will admit.  I never use it when the server picks up and I have not used it here but once and only because it was used on me.  I can show u but i dont know how to post in here and it will require multiple screenshots.  It flips extremely fast between the normal view and view through the walls so I can both navigate and monitor the entries to my position. Actually, its an awesome tool but I realize how wrong it truly is, and I don't get the satisfaction of regular play. On other servers, I have proven to be a god that others were in awe of because I could predict the future, but I cant tell u how to do it as I think my drivers are the reason that it works now.  As I have said, I have sacrificed my cursor for these drivers but not to cheat there are many more benifts to thier use my graphics and framerates have increased dramatically.  Please provide instrutions for screen shot posts and im sure this will be a fairly large thread. Normally i search ColdFLo not Cold that's why I took me this long to reply.  Also, I will not tattletale on those i think use it as i am not a rat and i think they are of high moral standing otherwise I would besides they could beat me regardless, especially now.

re: gl_ztrick and seeing through walls...

I've never been able to see through walls at all with gl_ztrick, so there must be something else at work here.  I don't believe the command is meant as a hack.  It's not "gl_walltrick", afterall.  I have a regular old Nvidia 4600 card, and again, gl_ztrick didn't give me any magical powers to see or do anything special.
