Dunno what else to do, so I'll try here

I have a G5, never had problems with it till about 2-3 weeks ago.

In the middle of a game all my setpoint key assignments crap out.
setpoint is still running, and all the settings are right. and reapplying them does nothing.
I have to exit and restart it, only to have it do the same thing 30 seconds to 30 minutes later.. sometimes 3 hours later.

I made duplicates on my keyboard for what I would use the mouse for, so when it craps out I can just do that fine..
but now the adjustable sensitivity is adjusting itself at those random intervals.

updated the drivers and all that jazz..
getting close to trying an all new windows install to see if that fixes it.

any other suggestions?

only ever does it playing q2, but I'm usually doing that anyhow so dunno if it can happen outside q2.
left the mouse sitting for hours without anything running and it was fine when I got back

i'm guessing something q2 is doing (with the mouse) is not operating properly with the mouse driver.

see if the same thing happens with a default q2 config, and maybe remove any registry changes you made for mouse acceleration, etc. also if you are running the software that ups the mouse polling, take that off. try just basic q2, with a default config, to isolate the issue to q2/mouse driver

I think you could also boot to safe mode, load the mouse driver, then run q2 at low resolution in software. it would be possible for other applications running to mess with your system (these won't load in safe mode), but i'd look to q2/mouse driver first..

I don't know, hopefully someone gives you better information, or you can get somewhere with this. try default config..

I know mine starts acting funny after repeated slams onto my desk while I'm playing. Also loose plastic parts start to chatter around inside them as well.

What operating system are you running? If its XP, I know all my laser mice that I've used reset their sensitivities on re-boot with XP. I have to "button" them one notch up on the mouse to get the desktop speed right and also get my Q2 sensitivity to the right feel. Not a big deal just odd.

You might try checking the mouse cable and the cables of anything it's plugged into (hubs, extenders...) - a faulty wire could cause the mouse to get reset, as well as any drivers and whatnot using it. If you can solder or know someone who can, USB cables are usually easy to replace.

Like he said above, could very well be the wire. I use a Habu at work and it's my 3rd RMA... the wire comes loose from something and resets the driver settings. Sometimes it doesn't turn back on unless I unplug the mouse and plug it back in.

had been using the onboard one, switching to one off a card.

do you need the mouse software running? With my Razer I don't need the software running for the buttons to work as assigned.

Try not running the software & see what happens. There could be some strange hot-key combo you're hitting that's resetting something somewhere.

The software is the only way I know to set the extra buttons.. mouse5 and mouse6? and the tilt mousewheel

without software its just a normal mouse, up to mouse4. left and right tilt do nothing, and the dpi buttons go back to doing dpi settings.

thought the new usp port fixed it, but didnt

played like 5 rail games in a row with no trouble
then some tdm warmup ok
back to rails and it cut out during the second game

I notice it because I use 900 dpi, and when it goes out it sets to the next highest dpi.. default probably
if I just bump it back to 900 its ok, but bumps back to 1200 on its own later so its a constant process.

the mouse software is the only thing going in my taskbar, besides volume controle

late to get ready as it is... still trying to find time for a windows reinstall

did you test the mouse with quake.exe and a default config? it seems like this happens often enough where you can reproduce the error.

this only happens in quake 2?

Never had it go out in anything other than q2, r1q2

I abhor any other .exe for q2,
I'll have to see if it happens with 3.20

not sure what a default cfg is though

Sounds like it has a hardware issue then... have you tried finding new firmware?

Hmm... in order for me to use assigned buttons on my Razor mice I have always needed the software running. Strange.

what mouse do you have? My copperhead runs fine w/o the software running. i guess the button assignments & settings are stored on the mouse, not on the computer.
