Repair demo - block size too big?
« on: March 10, 2008, 06:40:17 PM »
Hello, was wondering if any of you guys could help me.

I have obtained 3 demos of yesterdays MK500, none of them are playable, they stop after about 1 minute. I have tried to fix the demos in Keygrip 2 which gives me lots of warnings that the block sizes are too big. If i then save the demo as a dm2, they work, but wierd things happen like half of the players missing and the rest standing under the ground  :D.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

what's the size of the demo's?  And could you upload them somewhere (I have space if necessary)?

When I recorded a Splatterfest Q-Pong demo there were issues because of it's file size.  The mk500 demo I have is 9+mb in size & I keep getting a "bad FOV" error when I try to play it (fov = 0.0000000000).

I'm having the same problems with the demos. I only recorded a couple of short spectator demos last night but they won't even start to play. I found this bit of info in a keygrip tutorial:
Record client demos with cl_nodelta 1 (unless you are on a slow net connection). This will help alleviate some of the block size problems. (<- not much help when you've already recorded..)

Keygrip2 edits blocks while they are in their uncompressed form, and sometimes the resulting blocks are truncated because Quake 2 has a limit on the block size it can handle. This is not a problem, because when your finished product is saved as a .dm2 file again, the blocks are returned to their compressed form once again. However, if you notice entities disappearing, and you're not sure if they are "really" disappearing or just being truncated, you can check the "Delta Compress" box on the Demo Server window, and the 3D Preview window will compress as it plays. For the most part, however, this feature should remain unchecked for performance reasons.

I don't have keygrip installed right now but perhaps the delta compress thingy might help. Kinda sucks that it's so tricky to record heavy action demos:/  I always thought that it was only a problem with very long demos but since I recorded a couple of minutes yesterday there must be something else that's going wrong.

Thanks for the advice. I have tried the delta compress checkbox, but this doesn't seem to solve the problem, it allows keygrip to play the whole preview, but entities are missing and in the wrong place.

I tried to attach the demo, but it timed out, I guess it's too large. Happy Friar if you can point me to somewhere to upload or send it to, please let me know.

From what I have gathered so far, the blocks in the compressed version are too large, and get truncated when I save as delta compressed. If I save without delta compression (kg2 format), the demo is 80MB and still stops after about a minute.

Thanks again.
