Greetings and Salutations; aka. HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMEN

Having seen the following on the "dm" server logs:

18:36:02 * Elysium: wish they would use regular dm7 18:36:09 * pantaloons: why???? 18:36:28 * Elysium: because i like to play the original work 18:36:58 * pantaloons: well you could mymap the original :) 18:37:12 * Elysium: not the point though, this isn't a 'standard dm' server 18:37:16 * Elysium: just another modification

This made me wonder - is dm7mod really a detriment to the dm server?

I personally like Pan's dm7mod - ...... I'm saying that to get my bias out of the way. I just happen to like "new" stuff - like the adren. in the previously defunct "third tube", and the RA in the 'secret area' -- it just feels "fine tuned" to me, compared to the original.

HOWEVER, if the "dm" server really isn't providing the desired experience unless it's pure id dm1-8, lemme know... We could always make q2dm7 default and dm7mod available via mymap.

I agree with Elysium. dm7mod might be updated and play better than the original, but I'm one of those people who enjoys playing the original work more than improved versions of it. Not a lot more I can say about it than that.

As a map, I prefer dm7mod over q2dm7. But for this server, I think the original should be used, since that is the theme of the dm server, classic q2dm1-dm8 deathmatch. Can always mymap dm7mod on mutant, etc.

i agree with the train of thought that creates that idea, but dm7 sucks so bad it crushes it like a lightbulb beneath a large rock.

My view is that if this server is advertised as a standard DM server, then that's what it should be. Otherwise, you'll have an excuse to substitute any map at any time. What's the point? There's other choices at TS for servers where the modified map can be run.

It's like having a classic car. Sure, there's new technology that's going to enhance a classic, but then it's not really original now, is it?

Go with the DM server as advertised. Use the modded map on other servers.

Good point Slikk, but I never liked the classic dm2-7, I like 1and8 but not the rest so I don't see it the same.

For me I think the dm7mod is an improvement over q2dm7 primarily because of more balanced item placement.

However, I do think our ability to attract players outside TS is hurt by having a custom map. People tend to leave when 7 is hit.

When it's clearly advertised as a standard FFA DM server then I'd say keep it standard and boring. But as long as the server's hostname just reads: tastyspleen.net:dm, I see no problem with some custom maps. Replacing dm7 was the whole idea of modding dm7 and I'm glad you guys at least try to give it a shot. Cheers for that. But I also understand it may seem a bit odd to have just one map replaced. It would make more sense if there would be more maps replaced and new maps added or none at all.

I don't care much for a server with only the 8 standard maps, too repetitive and... yawn. Usually after playing all maps once I have seen enough and disconnect. I have never understood why people complain about a few custom maps on a FFA server. I mean some people act like it's "sacrilege" or something. Like, OMG! This map is not standard! I don't know....it feels wrong. I'm totally confused now!
Bleh...What's the big deal? Then what happens is you get seperate servers, one boring standard and one empty custom.

I've asked myself plenty of times why I bother with making maps and I still don't know the answer. But I know it's not always been like this, a few years back people just had to download custom maps in order to play on their crowded favorite server. Admins didn't care if some people left when a custom map was hit, because it would still be crowded and after awhile those same people got used to it.

The only reason I play on the vanilla server is the activity (I can't stand the maps), it almost feels like going back in time. With the number of players there the singleplayer maps have the right size, however I don't enjoy playing most of these maps. In fact it feels like I'm fighting the maps instead of the opponents.
I just seem to have the most fun on servers that run the standard maps plus a handful of good custom maps. It just breaks up the tedious monotony. Before they turned it into a private server I always enjoyed playing on 4u2's which had the default maps + a couple of 4u2 maps.
Most of my favorite old ffa servers ran the standard stuff plus maps like Match1, Aeroq2, Spasmo3(!), dmpak_1-4,

Perhaps Mutant could be running, on what, 30 maps.

Having the dm1-8 plus a few custom maps, rounding to 30. All other custom maps would be available through 'mymap'.

Mutant server is frequently crowded.

Anyway.

Myself Id rather play on a custom map server as I love new maps. and Ive had my share of dm1-dm8 (even though I still play them regularly). But a server running only these will probably not attract me, unless its crowded (just like vanilla).

theres nothing that says the dm server is strictly iD maps, so i dont think anything should be changed, i think dm7mod is a improvement over the original.. and the few games ive had there have been most enjoyable.

Hell no... that's MY server... and a few select others'...

Also... increase the damn map list... I want to play more maps already!

And definitely keep dm7mod in... if you get people cruising to tastyspleen from other servers consistently they're going to wind up downloading it eventually and then they'll be stoked on it cause it's so much more balanced and playable than the original.

About playing "original" maps. What difference does it make? I bet ID has a few other dm7's that are more "original" the final product they put out. I'm not using my "original" autoexec.cfg because it sucks. I don't think the fact anything (maps, music, computers, t-shirts, cars - well... hmmm, okay... original in digital form is a little different than original in physical form) isn't "original" should have anything to do with evaluating it. It should be based on its quality. If you like how dm7 plays better than the mod, then vote for it, but "original" really doesn't mean anything. In fact, aren't only the SP maps original?

Well... IMO the mod is better... but I never join the DM server anyway and never will... so i really shouldn't be saying anything at all!
