« on: March 01, 2008, 02:39:25 PM »

Here's an ss of of the error: notice at the top that the server says http downloading is enabled at that URL.
Then at the bottom the client is erroring-out with a 404 (file not found).
If I launch the quake2.exe, it downloads them fine.

I tried downloading the huge all-maps.zip but not one single map in that huge archive is running on the server.

If I can't get R1Q2 to work, would someone here be willing to rar up their maps dir and up it to an FTP or HTTP for me?

Ohhhh...

The vanilla server runs all the single-player maps (as well as the deathmatch maps, and some custom maps.)

boss2.bsp, in your screenshot, is one of the single player maps.

We are not allowed to distribute any of id Software's maps - thus you will not find them in the .zip archive.

The only legal way to get those maps is to buy a copy of the game.

It may be that r1q2 server is allowing those maps to be downloaded directly from the .pak file... (thus a non-HTTP download would retrieve them) ... however that's really not kosher from a copyright standpoint... :(

That's odd... I do own a legal copy (still have the original CD I bought in 1998) and still don't have the maps.

Could you do me a huge favor and post or email or PM me the list of maps in the current rotation?

Hmm, that is strange indeed.  The single player maps should be in your baseq2/pak0.pak.

The file size should be: 183,997,730 bytes.

The current vanilla rotation is:

base1 base2 base3 bunk1 ware1 ware2 jail1 jail2 jail3 jail4 jail5 security mintro mine1 mine2 mine3 mine4 fact1 fact2 power1 power2 cool1 waste1 waste2 waste3 biggun hangar1 hangar2 lab command strike city1 city2 city3 boss1 boss2 train fact3 space hardange q2dm1 q2dm2 q2dm3 q2dm4 q2dm5 q2dm6 q2dm7 q2dm8 tastydm2

OK, I must of installed the smaller version (sans maps) because my pak0 is 14.7 MB.

Thanks for the tips; I'll reinstall and see what happens.

No idea.  But I'd imagine they might, considering their whole catalog of games is still on sale through Steam.  (They updated all their old games to run on the latest versions of Windows.)

Turns out, all valve did was remove the titlebar and info text from dosbox, and run it through that. They essentially packaged it as their own, and sold a gpl program. Remember how John said he didn't know how they were going to get them to work in Vista? Yeah...

Well... They must have done a little more than that.  This is what my old quake.exe does when I run it under a WinXP DOS box:

Quake v1.06
Locked 1 Mb image
Locked 11 Mb data
malloc'd: 11825152
Exiting due to signal SIGSEGV
General Protection Fault at eip=000452cb

:bigcry:

As for Valve "packaged it as their own, and sold a gpl program", I don't think that quite characterizes it accurately.  This is something that was done with the blessing of id Software, and further, the code may be GPL, but the content isn't.
