So only the data flow is 1.2 gig/sec? There is always that initial delay? I was on a wireless system out on the northeast coast of Canada and for a larf I connected to the Vanilla server. I pinged around 100 versus 65 with cable at home. So it wasn't too bad.

at least. I tried Q2 once & it capped ~6000 or so.

The reason it takes so long is the distance traveled & all the conversions between you & the destination. To get to a server, it goes from your comp, to a modem, to a dish, to a satellite, to another dish, to another modem, to another computer, then through the internet to the destination. Then it goes all the way back. Each eay takes ~750ms because of the conversion. So you can get great speed, just with a delay.

So the speed is great, it's the distance thats the issue.

Satellite, yeah thats a trip.

I've seen automatic shotguns like that before. It was the armor peircing HE and frag grenade rounds I was impressed with. I didn't think it was possible, but Compton and Watts just got a little scarier.

I remember learning about the 1 second turnaround times for satellites back in an intro to telecom class. I remember the book mentioning that the turnaround time made satellites useful for large media transmission, but the delay makes it impractical for ISPs. (if you turn on your cable TV and call someone with satellite TV, you'll here about a 1 second delay in their TV)

I was assuming the "new technology" mentioned in the article would be able to aleviate the turnaround time somehow. But a lot of semi-remote locations in the US can't get cable TV or cable internet. This is a big reason why Satellite TV and DSL became so popular. It kind of sounds like they may just be launching an internet satellite so that remote locations that previously had no internet access can now have it.

Remember that in 2007 a few hospitals in Japan opened "baby drop" centers so that people who wanted to abandon their new borns could do so in a safe way. You placed your baby in the slot and ran back to your drug dealer, pimp, or mafia tied bookie. A man was arrested for dropping his 5 year old into the slot. He was caught quickly because the child remembered his own address and phone number. So Japan is chalk full of ideas with good intention, and everyone knows what that means.

it's a half second second delay based from the ground to satellite

22,233 miles to the satellite
round trip = times 4 = 88,932 miles

speed of light (wave propagation) = 186,282 mi/sec

latency = 88,932 / 186,282 = 0.477 seconds

that's just a fraction of the trip, and you have the propogation delay between the satellites. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Propagation_delay
