Quake III is, all things considered, id's fastest rendering engine - more efficient than q2 even. It looks like it's going to be a browser plugin, which is cool. I just hope that there's a downloadable client seperate from the browser available. John's been having a lot of crazy ideas lately, but they all make a whole lot of sense from a What People Want perspective. Go John, and go id.
Quake Live = Q3 in a browser. The whole project is lame in my opinion. It's supposed to have matchmaking and some other features but . Q3 has been out for 9 years and the netcode has been improved tremendously with CPMA (by far the best netcode for any fps I've played), and there are tons of mods/maps already available with virtually every feature imaginable for gameplay. QLive is not going to come out of the box with such gameplay features, and there's already a game that is the same damn thing Quake in general has dwindled to a small loyal base, and I don't think making this free coming out without proper mods/gameplay tweaks that made Quake 3 as best as it could be will win over many long term fans (future consumers). Just work on Quake 5 already!
Chances are that quake0

I could see this splitting the already small fanbase more.

The great mod and map makers are always looking for the next new engine to test their talents on in my opinion. New games are usually an opportunity for new ideas. Chances are that quake0 will not be as friendly to mods and custom maps, but whether they exist or not is a matter of time, not the original development team.
