Switching from joystick to keyboard

O.K., I have been playing Quake for as long as I can remember and I am an old dude!!!!lol,,, I have been using joystick sidewinder precision plus to play.It moves me forward, Backwards, Sidestep, and it twist left and right, the mouse is used for my aim kinda like controls the head of the body. I want to switch to keyboard because poeple say I will be better without joy, but I can not set it up to act like my joy. Where do I start for keyboard set up? I use my mouse in my left hand to duck, jump, and aim, and my joy does the rest. any tips????

forward = w
strafe left = a
strafe right = d
backwards = s
jump = space
crouch = c

Don't bother with the turn keys, use the mouse to turn by free look. Experiment with mouse sensitivities to find the one that fits your play style best.

then whatever other keys you wanna use for specific weapons.   use mouse to turn, dont bind any keys to turn, its useless

I'm the oddball - I use the keypad for everything:
Foward: 8
Backward: 2
Strafe Left: 4
Strafe Right: 6

Jump: mouse2
Crouch: either pinky on rightarrow, or thumb on kp_delete (try it, it's waaay less cramped)

All the other keys are easily available for weapon binds, chat macros, etc.
I can even use my pinky for all the arrow keys for movement specials, such as hook, dash, or whatever.
My ring finger can reach the pgup\pgdn\home\end\ins\del cluster for chat binds.

except mouse3 is crouch ;>, only difference from jehar

sounds like you might want to use the keypad for movement..  if the mouse is in your left hand for aim.
 
4 8 6 5 for forward left right back,  and you have all those keys around it for weps and things.. 

this w a s d and stuff is put up by right handed mouse users. (wanting to use the left side of keyboard)
if it wasnt for the need to precisely use directions in combinations,  joystick would be fine in your case.
But I dunno how well straf jumping and the like would work????

Changing config,  specially movement keys,  is really really tough.  You feel like a drunk playing for awhile.
I made a major change on a reccomendation after playing about a year,  best thing I ever did.
