Calling sport and pro level players..
« on: January 20, 2008, 05:35:47 PM »
Hi guys,

As some of you may be aware, for the past year or so I've been working on a Quake2-derived standalone deathmatch game called Quake2World (http://quake2world.net).  We're really pushing for a 1.0 release this spring, and so before that happens, I'd really like to incorporate feedback from some of the top active Quake2 players.  Some things you should know about the game:

The physics have been modified from Quake2.  Player acceleration, walk and run velocities, air acceleration, and upward jumping acceleration have all been slightly increased.
Weapon ballistics have been modified as well.  All firing rates have been increased, projectile speed and knockback generally increased as well.
The server tick rate is variable from 10hz (Quake2 default) to 120hz.  This allows tuning for LAN vs Internet games, and a more responsive game for everyone.
There is teams play, match mode, ctf, instagib, and rocket arena.  These all need further testing and adjustment.
There are bugs!  95% of the Quake2 source code has been touched, much of it significantly refactored or rewritten.  Do not expect perfection at this point in time.

If you fall into the aforementioned player group, and all of this sounds interesting to you, I'd be happy to bring you up to speed on the project, and get you play-testing immediately.  I'd ask that you only become involved if you see yourself as able to participate frequently over a period of at least several weeks.  To contact the team, please join us in #quetoo on irc.freenode.net.

Interesting project. Does the increased 'upward jumping' allow you to jump slightly higher or just initiate a regular jump quicker, with the same height? If it's higher (even a little bit) than that changes a lot. A typical crate in Quake2 is 64 units high and is just high enough that you can't jump on it. If you can now reach the top of any floor crate, it completely changes a lot of maps.

Good point -- I should have said that the upward velocity (not acceleration) was modified.  Since gravity is the same (800), this does mean that you can jump slightly higher.  Double jumping off of 64u crates is trivial.  The circle jump at the top of q2dm1 from the GL to the other catwalk is also a piece of cake.  So yes, this does change a lot of legacy levels (in a good way, I think).  But we also have new original levels being produced:

And some remakes of classic Quake levels:

As well as remakes of some Q3A levels:

Also, notable Quake2 level designers Jester, Panzer, and Cardo have recently contacted the team, and are all creating fresh levels for Quake2World, so we're definitely looking forward to their work too.

Can you give any release dates yet?

Will they SP maps be played like on vanilla?#

Are fun players allowed (vanilla style dm with SP maps) or is your mod/standalone only for competitioners?

It looks really nice, and the jumps should be even more fun now without tweaking your quake like hell and using all those mysterious commands.

Screen shots of maps doesn't really mean much - post a demo of game play or people just running around.  Can't sell people on an idea without giving them some idea of what is different.

Once released, we'll play it at the next LAN.

In the meantime, some of my "bros" play weekly, so we might play it then too and provide feedback.

I can't give you a demo -- Quake2World protocol is significantly different from Quake2; you don't have a client that could view it (unless you installed Quake2World).  The shots were really just to prove that the project is for real, and to show how much prettier than Q2 it looks.  And I did give you an idea of what is different -- that's what the first post was.   :lolsign:

The initial release is slated for this Spring (before May).  That is all I can tell you right now.  I hope that the gameplay is found to be enjoyable by veteran players of all skill levels.  Personally, I love it (duh :D), and I don't consider myself very good at all.  I do mention veteran players, because newbies or people coming from Counter Strike or something may find it too fast for them.  Quake2World is really for players who cut their teeth on games like DOOM and QuakeWorld.

Oh, and since you kind of asked, yes Q2W still reads standard Quake2 BSP format, so you may drop in any legacy levels you wish.  But I can't guarantee that we'll ship the 1.0 release with suitable replacement media (textures and sounds) to support all or even most id Software levels.

Thanks guys!  It's really flattering to be compared to a project like Warsow.

Pan, don't think I don't know who you are ;)  We'd love to have another veteran Quake2 mapper onboard.  Have you seen http://quake2world.net/mapping?  If you're interested, let me know!

I downloaded the video but I'm not that familiar with those particular maps. Its hard to judge the differences or feel of the new game because I can't see the differences in the movement and physics. Is it possible to do a demo of a familiar Q2 map - say Q2-DM8, City1 or even the tired Q2-DM1? Then we can see the enhancements more clearly and compare it to the Quake2 we're all familiar with.
Thanx...

As for the maps, I recognized jstress in there and q2rdm2, and they looked nice!
I couldnt tell if that was a q2w remake of jstress, since youve got jester on board, but it looked much cooler than it does in regular q2 due to the environmental effects like the fog and the light bloom on some of the fixtures..

The one they open with in the video is the q2w map in the first screeny, as far as I can tell, and I spotted a doom3 remake in there.

cool stuff!
