Does this OpenGL applet run in your browser?
« on: January 14, 2008, 03:01:23 AM »
GREETINGS

Apparently it's finally possible to run hardware-accelerated OpenGL applets in a web browser!  Something I've been wanting for a long time...

Does this little "gears" demo run in your browser?

https://jogl-demos.dev.java.net/applettest.html

I'd be interested in knowing, for example:

  - What OS and browser you are using?
  - Did the gears demo work for you?  (You should be able to click and drag with the mouse to change the camera angle.)
  - Did you have to install anything to get it to work?
  - If so, how long did it take to perform the installations?  Was it fairly painless, or a hassle?

Thanks!

quadz

- Did you have to install anything to get it to work?  i had to install a new java app in both browsers, and both browsers were freshly updated.  So i would expect most people to have to update or more accurately download new software to view.

- If so, how long did it take to perform the installations?  It took less then 30 seconds to do everything necessary to view the gears.

- Was it fairly painless, or a hassle?  It was completely painless.

Worked fine for me.  I'm using firefox.  The installation took about 15sec.

firefox, asked to download/install a small java file (already had java installed from openoffice), using vista home premium.

it runs, I can move around, but the applet is stuck in the upper left of my screen, but I can't control via the upper left, I must use the window in the browser.  It looks like when you try to run Q2 in full screen, but it went FUBAR & is in a window, but has full control over everything.  I have java 1.6.0 & have had issues like this with it before.  But it's needed for some apps I run & can't have multiple versions installed.  :'(

Console,

Flash is able to handle some quite sophisticated 3D models with the new classes that were introduced. I'm messing with them now. The detail of the graphics are largely dependent  on the 3D modeler (uv wrapping etc etc).I'd say that it's like the PS1 right now. I have an example on my site, but those are just wireframe primitives. some of the stuff out there is truly mind boggling. I don't really know if hardware acceleration is a factor or not.

- Windows XP Pro SP2, IE7, FireFox 2.0.0.11
- Yes.
- Looked like it needed Java but that was already installed on my system. I was asked a bunch of things when using FireFox but IE 7 started it right up.
- Any yes or no questions are a hassle to me so for using FireFox it was a hassle and IE7 was painless.

Works just fine in the latest Opera version, only needed to accept the certificates. What are you plotting quadz?

Well, I don't enjoy traditional web programming.  It's such a pain to do real-time stuff...

But I was thinking of making a sort of real-time game status browser, and stats and stuff... I'd just rather do it on OpenGL than move <div>'s around in a web browser DOM.  :dohdohdoh:

Something like that... just mulling over some ideas...

Those are good idea's quadz, i know how you feel moving div's around lol. I don't know who all here is a developer, but do you think you could add a "Programming" section for us newbs so we can ask questions about general quake 2 codeing.I'm having trouble understanding file I/O (binary format) to load an external .md2 file. Someone had already built a class for that, but i'm trying learn some low-level stuff. So quadz, are you experienced with java at all? Actionscript's architect is a lot like java i heard.

Oh, the updating in real-time stuff wouldn't be a problem as long as you could generate an XML file on the backend.

Agreed.  I know about XMLHttpRequest and JavaScript... I just don't enjoy it much.  :D

Sure, we could set up a coding section...

I've done a fair bit of Java programming, but that was 6 years ago before they added generics to the language.  I think I would hate Java less now that it has generics...

Here's a link about the .md2 file format:

1: What OS and browser you are using?

XP PRO SP2
IE6

2: Did the gears demo work for you?

YES

3: Did you have to install anything to get it to work?

A java plugin of some sort.

4: If so, how long did it take to perform the installations?  Was it fairly painless, or a hassle?

It installed in less than 5 seconds and was quite easy to do.

- XP SP2, Opera 9.24.
- Yes.
- No, except accepting certificates like 3 times and answering a question of disabling Java2D using in DirectDraw.
- It wasn't any pain.
