In 10 years...

Quake II is 10 years old, and (at least to me) still popular and the best FPS multiplayer ever. I have played many other games and most online games die pretty quickly. Which other games have stood the test of time? And 10 years from now, will Quake II still be around? Which of today's games do you think will survive this long?

The only other ones i could possibly imagine still being around is Call of Duty2, UT2003, and Counter Strike. UT4 and cod4 are to new to tell.

COD4 Hardcore mode FTW!!!

It blends run and gun with weapon and skill pickups.

AKA you start with a mp5 then come across a pickup zone (highlighted like checkpoints in Grand Theft Auto races) and it's a M4 Carbine rifle with a Red Dot sight and a undermount Grenade Launcher....kill 3 noobs with your 1337 pwnage and call in a UAV radar scan and locate a "Deep Penetration" powerup....Hide in a central building and notice somone on the other side of the wall (thanks UAV radar, ur my +1 friend) and shoot through the wall thus killing the uber nub who promptly calls hax/mods/cheat like a little North American "everyone has to advance at the same level" bitch.

I love that game...so very much.

Me and my father will be playing COD4 after about Jan 1.  Expect BTF FFA servers.  And that hardcore looked like a winning mod too.

My expectations for q2 in ten years is tastyspleen alive in some form being the heart of what is left of the community.  I expect the population to be about 50% to 75% what it is now.   New mods and clients will be the basis for the further life of the game.  i am hoping to some day have a client that gives incredible graphics, but i'm sure it is not to be.  i dont see anything that would bring more players to q2 then what is here today.  In fact, i dont know that i want alot more, as it would bring in more of today's "trash talk and whining attitude".  New games in my opinion are let down on the multiplayer side by shitty attitudes from overly-competitive young men and immature teens/pre-teens.  This is why i rarely jump into a game in its infancy.  It is the single factor that ruined Counter Strike for me.  Some folks, like myself would prefer to play a nice civil game free from verbal attacks and false accusations.  That is one factor i expect will keep q2 alive, both its sense of community, and its unique physics and fast gameplay.

The original Call of Duty still has a very strong following, and i expect it to be around and alive, bumping along in a steady rhythm just like q2's state now.

Seeing how F.E.A.R. has been free for sometime, and seeing how it was the pinnacle of graphics for sometime, and still is near the top, i expect it to have activity ten years from now.  In fact i have long considered F.E.A.R. would follow in the exact footsteps as Quake2 in this manner.

Yeah, but the funny part is how people feel so intrigued to pop off at the mouth to other players they don't even know with comments involving twisted implications that have really nothing to do with Q2..... unless there is some secret version of Quake out there that involves p0rn 

Hmm, well I don't think there is a secret version of Q2 that involves porn, hmm, but you know there is alot of MODS out there for Q2.

In 10 years, no computers will run quake 2 and the market forces will cause us to keep ancient computers in our spare rooms that we rarely ever turn on anymore. Remakes and revamps will still be scatered and far between with little effort from the fans to keep one consistant solid one going. Either TS or R1ch .net will still have a single server that's popular on friday nights. Communities like zdaemon will come and go, and jQuake2 will become a tab on jdoom's website.

I'll be on the server's every night though. With the new release of Megaman q2 16.4b

I think also 1 of the reasons q2 still is alive is just because it is simple it dont require a ninja computer. Everyone play on same line and have basically same chances to win except different skill  but who can today say they dont know his/hers computer will be able to run q2?  Then it ofcourse is a amazing solid game. I will never stop play q2 even when im mainly a q3 player so have q2 a special place in my heart.
