Happy birthday Quake II!
10 years is a long time; it is a game that has withstood the test of time and still keeps pumping out new stuff. It deserves more praise than it gets.
So, I've been thinking this week of some sort of event to hold to celebrate. Cause what is 10 years without a party ?
I'm a full ten year player of this game, even when I lost internet I played the OSP bots and went through single player. I may not be the best player of Quake II, but I love it and devote time to it just the same. Thrill of the challenge, the great people you meet, all of it. Worthy mention is id software and what has come from them and other companies working side by side. Anyone remember the biggest breakthrough in graphics, ever, called GLQuake; that several hundred dollar card called the Diamond Monster 3D. The very foundation of what is used today, OpenGL. The first 2 Quake's will never die, even in another 10 years if noone plays it anymore, it will still have it's place in history as being a revolution in gaming and graphics. Any error in this statement please let me know, but that december when the Diamond Monster 3D came out and I bought one, hooked it up, and loaded GLQuake...That to me was one of the greatest moments in not just gaming but computer graphics entirely. It was visualy mesmerizing to just fire the weapons and look around. Anyway... on to the event.

So far the best thing I've come up with that has gotten the most positive feedback, is to hold an all afternoon/night event that will run through the best mods that have come from Quake II.

Nighthunters is a cool mod that can be played with few people (only). One is the alien prey and has some special weapons. The other guys are marines and try to kill the alien. The one killing the alien becomes it. This mod works with all maps. But there are no lights. So the marines have flashlights and the alien sees them infrared. A good map is strike to play this mod. The alien can jump higher and has no faling damage. The maps are 100% dark and you can only see the sky and the flashlight spots. Oh i think the alien is half transparent. Great fun mod for 3 to 5 people i guess just for a couple of half hours. Should be on TS aswell.

Anywho, I'm getting a hardon for some light, teambased mods such as QPong (one of the greatest zany q2 nights of my life), weaponsfactory, etc. That nighthunters thing sounds fun too.

Props to QPong though. I crave more.

i played that mod a good bit back on zone...id have to agree about the amount of people too..all in all its fun for a bit

Q2 came out december 9, not 6th. And I got the game the 3rd day it came out. Played in software for a while, then bought a 3dfx voodoo2 pci card and man that was the shit. You wouldnt believe how much better the game looked. Q2 is the best fps game ever made for online play, possibly the best online game ever. Either q2 or everquest.
