Mouse polling rates
«

Been playing around with the Microsoft Habu gaming mouse in the last week or so. Unfortunately the mouse is just too big and chunky in my hand so its unusable for me. However I like the accuracy of it due to the 1000 dpi and polling rates of 400 or higher. It was very precise.
So I bought a smaller Logitech LX3 which has a default 1000 dpi, but stock polling rate (125Hz) with no adjustment. So I downloaded a few Utilities to tweak up the poll rate. One works only in "Safe Mode" so I tried that and chose 500Hz and re-booted to Windows XP. Checked the rate and it was still 125. Tried other higher rates and still no change. Then I used a Russian utility which works directly in Windows and can apply itself to only the mouse. (Your other USB devices can have problems with higher rates.) Checked the rate and still at 125. I choose 31 and this works so the driver is OK. I read the documentation and it says if it won't go higher than the 125 rate, than the mouse itself is un-overclockable. A safety thing I guess. So tomorrow I'll try my generic MS mouse and see if I can overclock it.
I'm just posting this as an update to Elysium's Tweak post in case others have tried over-clocking mice and failed. Now I know the reason why.

I've always liked the Razer mice. I've owned the Diamondback, Habu and now I use the DeathAdder.
The Diamondback is pretty small and has a default polling rate of 700 and a DPI of 1600 or 1800 (DPI depends on the model you choose). It's also Optical which I find to be 10x more accurate and less corky then laser mice. If you read some legitimate reviews online you will find that laser mice haven't been able to beat an Optical mouse in stability.
The Habu is a laser mouse. At the time when I bought it the driver support was horrible and no more then a few weeks after I bought it the DeathAdder was released. So I didn't use the mouse that long for gaming but I still use it at work.
The DeathAdder has the same shape as the Habu which I enjoy personally. It has a polling rate of 1000 and a DPI of 1800 and is an Optical mouse. This mouse has be my personal favorite so far. I don't see myself replacing it anytime soon.
When replacing an old mouse remember it's going to take you some time to get use to the new one. I used the old MS Optical mouse for over 4 years before I bought the Diamondback. I switched back to the IE mouse all the time but eventually the Diamondback mouse grew on me. Best thing to do is to find a great performance mouse you find comfortable and stick with it for a looong time. Don't feel obligated to buy the "new and improved". That's the mistake I kept making but now I found the mouse I'm sticking with.

ok, I've got a copperhead (had it for a year or two) & haven't found it more accurate them the generic laser mouse I had before. IE in Quake 2, if U have my laser mouse with any "default settings "(plug it in & go). Use my Copperhead, change it to 1000hz & 2000DPI, but it still turns me just as fast. Min turning distance is the same, it still
"stutters".
Any ideas?

What type of surface do you mouse on? Laser mice are just plain well known for "stuttering" which is the downfall of them. Given a good mouse pad surface it can reduce it and add more stability.

i'm still using a Q2 mouse pad from when Q2 came out. but it happens on any surface. doesn't look like it's the beam having issues, looks like it's no more accurate then any other mouse (including all ball/laser i've tried).

You would be very surprised how much the surface makes a difference in the accuracy of your mouse.
Surfaces like this ugly sob -

what's the difference between laser & optical? I've never seen a non-ball mouse that didn't use a laser (once used a Sun laser mouse... needed a special glass mouse "pad!"
). The copperhead has an invisible laser ass opposed to the red laser in cheaper mice.

No.
"The difference between a regular optical mouse and a laser mouse is the light used to track movement. A regular optical mouse uses an LED light in the optical engine, while a laser mouse uses a laser to track movement. The more dots per inch (dpi) a mouse can track, the more sensitive and accurate it is. A typical optical mouse tracks between 400dpi and 800dpi, while laser mice track more than 2,000dpi."
The problem is now Optical mice are catching up to Laser mice in DPI (my mouse has 1,800 DPI and is optical). It is well known that Laser mice can be very corky at low sensitivities, they can become jittery, skip, stutter etc... Optical mice don't tend to have this problem with their LED technology even with the 1,800+ DPI they are set at now.
Also... new Optical mice don't have that "cheap" red beaming coming out of them. The act like laser mice.

Be weary of a $80 keyboard.
Lachesis is gonna be a very fast laser engine. I'd be weary of that too.
Make sure you find some reviews on those items before you buy them.
