New video card, new power issue.
« on: November 13, 2007, 06:35:52 PM »
I acquired a Geforce 8600GT and seated into my mobo. Upgraded to a 450w power supply only to turn on the PC and see my fans briefly cycle and then nothing happens.

I am unsure on how to remedy this situation as I would love this upgrade from my current 7300GS.

Oh tech support gods help me.

The new power supply isn't the problem, i think, as I have re-seated my 7300 and it's working now. Halp!!!

Did you plug in the 8600 with the PCI-E plug from the PSU?

Incorrect. That is more then enough power.

The minimum requirements are:

Minimum of a 400 Watt power supply.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 22 Amp Amps.)

Minimum 450 Watt for SLI mode system.
(Minimum recommended power supply with +12 Volt current rating of 24 Amp Amps.)

An available 6 pin PCI-E power connector (hard drive power dongle to PCI-E 6 pin adapter included with card)

In fact he has enough for another card if he wanted...

My question whether or not he plugged in th 6-pin PCIe power connector still stands.  ;D

I have two 8800 GTX cards and each requires TWO PCIe power connectors, so I had to get a PSU (1010Watt) with 4 freakin connectors.

The power supply I have does not appear to have a connector for the card. To tell you the truth that's a new concept to me.

Here's a picture of the card itself...should this connector attach to the circled area?

most new and high end cards require direct connection from the power supply to function
you might be able to find some sort of adapter

Opps. I misread your card model. Was thinking 8800GT since that's all people are talking about lately.

That circled spot is for the SLI Bridge.

You don't need a PCIe power plug for that card. You have more then enough power to run it, may be faulty.

Make sure it's seated right.

Before you put it in the computer make sure you uninstall the 7300 drivers! Your system won't boot properly if you didn't do this.

Enter Windows in safe mode by pressing F8 while it boots up and still in bios (before windows screen). Enter Safe Mode with no drivers. Uninstall you video drivers through add and remove programs and if need be remove them from Device Manager. Then try to boot it up with the 8600 installed. If and when it boots up d/l the nVIDIA forceware drivers off their site. Don't bother with the CD that came with the card.

Sorry made an edit. Had to step away when I finished that post.

Oh and if it isn't a driver problem what was the PSU you purchased? Model and Manufacture.

Power Supply

Thanks for your help so far Jager.

I'll try to go back and see if the guys @ Generic Technology can help me out. The PSU originally came from them via my buddy and so did the card.

Yeah, generic / noname power supplies are nasty beasts. Get some quality juice flowing in your system with something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139003

Yeah I think I'm going to cough up a couple hundred bucks and go grab an 8800.

So with this newer model I should be looking for a PSU that has the connector as part of it or keep this one and go for an adapter to change the pin setting?

Was it determined which part was faulty?

The PSU r1ch linked is perfect for running a single card. I'm not a fan of any kind of adapters but I guess if it works it works...
