It works!

I built a nice new Quad Core system.

Installed Q2 and all it's goodies.

I try to play and something seems wrong. Everything is kind of skippy... slow... everything is just... off. The game is running horrible.

So I troubleshoot my initial thoughts... config(fps settings, r1q2 settings), monitor refresh rate, some graphic card settings. Nothing worked.

I was about to give up and just deal with it. Then finally, somebody who was experiencing a very similar problem comes up with a solution.

This happened to me. After my mobo fried I upgraded to a quad-core CPU, but kept the same video card as before (geforce 7800).

Q2 ran horribly, sometimes it was smooth for a bit, but inexplicably it would bog down with lag. (Even playing on localhost, but it was worse connected to a remote server.)

I found a setting in the nvidia control panel that fixed it. It was the "Threaded optimization" setting, which it describes as:

"Allows applications to take advantage of multiple CPUs. Most newer applications should benefit from the Auto-select or On settings. This setting should be turned off for most older applications."

I turned it Off and Q2 runs fine now. (One nice thing is their control panel lets you override settings for particular program .exe files. So I just turned it off for r1q2.exe and quake2.exe, and left it "Auto" for the rest of the system.)

Totally fixed the problem I was experiencing. After hours of frustration and chugged beers all I had to do was flip one lousy setting.

wow, now i know why i havent been playing q2 all year. the choppiness on and off was a dead giveaway. i can't find the thread optimization setting as of now, but no biggie, because i plan on getting a graphics card sometime in the near future, i'll deal with it then

I doubt that my shitty onboard vid even has a setting like that (VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP)

lol ... I upgraded my CPU/MOBO last week but the PCI-e video card that came with it was dead so I used the onboard VGA card which is a 'VIA/S3G UniChrome Pro IGP' Hahaha, what a piece of shit this is

I also have a dual core CPU now and Q2 is unplayable, usually crashes the machine! I can confirm there is no such setting for this deeply crappy onboard video card (which also steals some of my RAM). Only solution I can see is to upgrade video card.

Strangely though it plays Age of Mythology on top GFX settings smooth as you like.

I just got a dual core/on board vid combo myself. Steals ram as well...

Gets real jerky when firing rox, blaster, rail, hyper,.. well, firing anything.
Thought it was particles causing the drag, but turning them off did nothing.

Only setting it had that was any help was "driver memory footprint"
normal and high sucked, but switching this to low made it alot better, playable but not prfect.

Still working with getting things set up to play right.
Think we'll be looking for another desk and another flatscreen and just set my old pc back up for q2.

But till then I'm stuck on this one.

I don't even have a way to turn v-sync on or off

gl_dynamic 0 helps a lot on integrated cards since they don't have dedicated video memory, the dynamic lights are usually streamed to GPU memory which is way faster than RAM.

Ooooh, Will have to try that. Game is bright enough that I dont even notice the lights from weaps.
