It's so crucial to me that solos be musical... it's so disappointing when some uber-skilled shredder gets up and plays what consitutes a few different scale patterns played very fast up and down the neck... I just want to yell at them, you've got the chops but no melody!! Go learn a charlie parker solo or something!!
Oh well anyway

heh...Charlie Parker. I think a lot of contemporary guitarists could benefit from listening to some of the Jazz greats if they want to hear and understand melody and composition.
I also find that the equipment and technology today makes things much easier than when I was learning. Seems everyone is using an Ibanez style speed neck with super-sustaining pickups/amps which can hide flawed picking. And that type of equipment seems to encourage speed and technical scale picking for its own sake and assuming that the result is musical.
I won't belabour my point of view which will be perceived as "geezer" but if you listen to Alvin Lee at Woodstock, the whole thing just rocks. Its real energy and he, and the crowd, are totally into it. You can feel it. Not sure who could do that today with just a straight amp and a Gibson ES335.

Haha, almost 11 years necro-post ;)

"the biggest shred collab song in the world II (2018)"

So, unsurprisingly, some percentage of this was fairly 'standard' shredding; but there were a few segments that gave me that authentic jaw-dropping :WTF: feeling.

Eddie Van - Halen

Steve Ray Vaughn

Robert Plant

HAHAHA! Does he even play guitar at all? I don't think I've ever seen him touch a guitar.

Anyway, at 5:20-ish in that video, looks like's playing a little Rainsong carbon fiber short scale acoustic bass or something. Dunno if you've ever tried out one of those carbon fiber acoustic guitars before, but you definitely should. I honestly think they just might sound better than even something like a high end Martin. I picked one up in a little music shop one day on a goof thinking it would sound like shit and was instantly blown away by the full bodied tone of it. Never figured something that WASN'T wood could sound better than wood.

Typically an afterthought kinda guy when it comes to discussions about great guitar players, especially since he died about 10 years ago, but he's always been one of my favorite blues players. The way he approached blues scale leads (which has been done a bazillion times by everyone and can get kinda stale after so long) was pretty unique and fresh sounding, to me anyway. And the tone he's getting out of his shit in this video is fucking KILLER, especially for a live setting. Starting at 2:55, I love that wah with what sounds like a little bit of octave fuzz.

SUPER DUPER DOUCHEY 11 YEAR NECROPOSTATIONISM!

...Chuck Schuldiner of Death.

Didn't wanna make a new thread just for this.

Streaming now for FREE on Tubi.tv, Death by Metal, the story of Death and Chuck Schuldiner who passed from complications due to brain cancer in 2001. Has interviews with Richard Christy, Paul Masvidal, Steve DiGiorgio, Sean Reinert, Gene Hoglan. It covers pretty much 15 or so years of the history of the band and how it changed over the years. It seems to omit some in-depth conversation about things. I would've preferred a multi-episode thing that dug deeper into the recording process of each album and in particular the American dates of  the tours. I only ever got to see him play live once back in the summer of 1993 after Individual Thought Patterns came out. God, I miss the 90's.

...Chuck Schuldiner of Death.

...

I've seen a few videos from this guy before. He usually tries to nail down a bands guitar sound from one album in particular... usually using little more than a little Marshall DSL20 and little Mesa Boogie 2x12 vertical cab.

Chuck Schuldiner (died Dec 2001) - Death - Symbolic (album released 1995) Sounds like he nails this one to me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPoM0uVTfGg

Maybe not the hardest rhythm sound to duplicate, but the lead sound with chorusing that Chuck always used is a little tougher to replicate. Of course Chuck was kind of a product of the times as far as his sound went (which is always going to be largely determined by whatever gear is available). He always had bad luck with managers and band finances, so when he selected gear for touring, he tried to pick things that were as reliable and hassle-free as possible... and cost effective. Unfortunately, the man never saw any considerable financial success during his life (which is why he died so young and wasn't able to get better treatment for his cancer). The Marshall Valvestate amps of the era had 12ax7 tubes in the preamp, but a solid state poweramp section (no tubes) which made them more reliable, even though they didn't really sound as great as the Marshall JCM900's from the same period. They were also much cheaper than the JCM900 heads, so he could afford to buy several of them for backups. They tended to have a really scooped midrange to them, which these days people DO NOT like. But for that period in music, that was "the sound" that death metal bands were already using.

Unrelated but sort of related: A lot of bands from back then were also using the BOSS MT2 Metal Zone distortion pedal ... I was one of the many users as well. And these days, a lot of metal players HAAAAAAATE the sound of the Boss Metal Zone pedal... myself included. I still have mine, and while I never use it, I can't bring myself to sell it. Every time I sell a pedal or amp, I always regret it later, even if I know damn well I'd never use it.
