HOW ARE YOU GENTLEMEN.
OK - we've gotten so many requests for a dm1-8 server I figure we'll start one up.
I'm leaning toward making it dm1-8 by default rotation, but have some additional maps available via
mymap
.
Possible maps available via
mymap
would include: q2dm1inv, match1, ztn*, kryptonite, ... a few other high-calibre deathmatch style maps. If you have additional maps you'd like to
mymap
on the dm1-8 server let me know...
We also need a nickname for this new server. Could be something simple and boring like, "dm". This is the name you'd use with the
goto
command. Maybe "dm" is a good enough name. But if anyone has fun sounding alternatives, I'm open to something more colorful.
Also - by default,
- quad on/off ?
- invuln on/off ?
- powershield on/off/(or powerscreen instead) ?
- bfg on/off ?

quad-off or on, i dont care
ps-i dont mind it being on, i love being able to rail a guy three or four times in a row to kill him
invul-the only thing id ever created that i didnt like. Not so bad in ffa cuz you can run and hide, but sucks in 1v1 battles.
bfg-i enjoy the bfg.
Thanks for setting the server up. i'll be so happy to have it, wont care what the settings are.

Quad Damage - on/off, doesn't matter, but it being on would be interesting.
Invulnerability - off, it might be too cheap...even for me.
Power Shield - on, I love this thing and would like to see it available.
BFG - on, it's fun to use sometimes even if people always complain about it.
q2dm4 and q2dm6 just would not be the same without the BFG. And I'm not the most creative person when it comes to thinking up names for things like this, but I'm sure at least a few people on here can think up something.

Random note...I have been using the same thing to greet groups of people on the Internet lately. Only in good fun, but I'm not sure if they like it too much for some reason.

Quad: Would be nice with quad on maybe, then I can practice the art of quadrunning without begging someone to play teams on irc. Cause after all, so few plays with quad on anymore it's almost a lost art to go around quad ssg people at spawnpads. And would be some fun battles over quad with experienced players who play. And nothing is more fun than fragging the quadrunner. As long as it is instant powerups. Quaddrop on/off? Hmm, not sure. Guess it's one of those things you can decide as well
invul: don't see the need for it in ffa, but since it only spawns every 5 minutes I don't see any harm having it on either. Completely up to you to decide.
Powershield: as long as you managed to have the RA/mega spawn on dm8 turn it off, but if not I think dm8 lose a lot of it's charm for me. I love the vertical fighting up and down that shaft, and how people drop down, but can't get up, and also killing the camper in the cave
If you leave it on, I'd be spending most my time on dm8 running for cells
I get so occupied by that I forget to frag.
BFG: dm2, dm4, dm6 and dm8 are the maps with bfg. I'd rather have the rail on dm2 than the bfg. dm4 I wont play much anyway, and when the bfg is on the fraglimit (if such exist) will be reached sooner wich is a good thing. Dm6 is fun for BFG and is a part of the map, and it's easy to avoid it by keeping away from the bfg and the outlands. Dm8 it's hard to reach. I'd say just leave it on, it doesn't do all that much harm, and the maps with it on are usually big and would be pretty dead in areas if it's off.
q2dm7/dm7mod: again up to you. As an FFA map that is pretty damn actionpacked regardless. Think people will still camp the same spots, but now getting RA will be even harder than before. Gonna be fun regardless.

Replace stock dm7 by Pan's one. It can only be better.
There's only Power Shield that I really don't wanna see on.

My 2 cents -
Quad - off, inevitably there's always one good player, that will hog the quad, and have it everytime it pops, and clean house, leaving the map a fight for 2nd place. And if it must be on, please let quad drop be off, so once the quadder dies, the quad madness is ended =) At least that's my preference.
Invuln - off, though like daelmun said, with the long respawn, I don't really care much about this one, and it's only on dm3 too right? no biggy either way for me
Power Shield - off, overpowering IMO
BFG - off, not sure if I find this or quad more annoying. a GL spammer can be fairly annoying too. Deaths thanks to those 3 items annoy me most about quake 2, otherwise I'm generally accepting of dying any other way.
I've never had problems having fun without any of the above items, but the above items many times have taken away from the fun I've had, at least that's the way I felt. I prefer to be beaten by skills, rather than superior firepower.

man I don't see the fun in invuln, even on dm3, I mean when you have it I guess it's fun, running into people with rl and killing them no matter what but if you don't have the invuln it's just gay unless the guy with it falls in the lava :P
take this for instance, it's a total thrill to take someones quad, especially someone who whores it, same with ps, it takes talent to be able to avoid their shots long enough to take their powerup, but with invuln, you just have to sit out the 30 secs or however long it runs (I dunno cuz I haven't gotten it in longer than I can remember) but when Im up against someone with it at mutant I just stand still and let them kill me because really, what's the point

ooh, this sounds interestings especially with the cool maps in mymap, i know ill be playing on this server instead of the kots2000 servers ive been playing on lately.. what i think about the powerups:
quad: I say leave it on, quad always gives it a twist that it needs to keep you interested after hours of playing hehe, i promise i wont use my quad timer! ive been timer free for awhile now
invuln: same with daelmun, i don't mind it on or off since its a rare powerup but I don't find it as fun as quad since its impossible to die with it (cpma's invuln was alot better, you can still lose health).. so i guess i'm leaning more on off
power shield: pretty cool powerup, i say leave it on cause it takes skill/luck getting it and keeping it until ure stacked then its all fun there! and everyone has a equal chance of getting one so there can be more than one who have it and that will result in some pretty cool fights. what dm maps have this? only dm8 right? also: whats power screen?
BFG: i never cared for this weapon either way, I like playing with it on and I don't mind at all with it off, but I say leave it off if you're gonna use at least two of the above.. if not put it on

It's up and running... I went with the name "dm"; easy to type "goto dm" and pretty self-explanatory.
Current settings--but not set in stone:
- quad on, with quad-drop
- invuln off
- powershield -> power screen
- bfg on
- weapons stay
- fraglimit 0
- timelimit 10
- q2dm7 -> dm7mod
Note that quad, quad-drop, and weapons stay can be changed via mymap. (mymap also allows changing other dmflags like health, armor, and infinite ammo - which may or may not be something desirable for this server - but currently I don't have a way to limit which dmflags mymap can override on a per-server basis.)
For those unfamiliar with the power screen, it's a weaker version of the powershield, and it only protects from the front.
For mymap, I decided to make available all the maps on the list for the 2nd tourney (plus a couple extras): 4u2map12a 4u2map3 4u2map8a aerowalk boss2 colour confess dm7mod fury grom_dm3 grunt ikdm1 ikdm6 joyride krypton match1 paradm4 poodm10 q2dm1inv q2pduel4 q2rdm2 q2rdm7 shadows tastydm1 trdm04a ven_dm2 ztn2dm1 ztn2dm2 ztn2dm3 ztn2dm4 ztn2dm5

I'm still not sure if the original q2dm7 should be replaced by another version of it (even if the changes are minor). I like playing the original work more than an altered one.
Hopefully the original version can be left on vanilla or something at least...But I guess I will have to get used to it. Never was a huge fan of that map anyway.
I'm still sticking with vanilla/railz for the most part, but I hope you guys enjoy this server that you have been requesting for a while now.
