The Power Shield really does ruin the game

It's like a permenant invulnerability and it promotes retarded behavior like running away and item shopping. It's called deathmatch, not "run around and grab items while camping weapons as much as possible" match.

I'm also not the only one that came to this conclusion because in the Quake2 release for Nintendo 64 the powershield was a powerup that randomized with the quad, inv, and invisibility and had a time limit of about 30 seconds. Obviously the ID team agrees with me.

The power screen was a great idea. If you run like a little girl you are no longer protected. Personally the most satisfying kills are when someone with more health and a better weapon than I, is running away to get more armor and yet I still beat them down like a wounded animal.

This is why large deathmatches will always be fun and 1 on 1's will always be lame.


O.k. I vented. I'm going to continue never running, never engaging in an unfair fight unless I have the disadvantage, and never item shopping. That is all... you buncha smurfs.

If you're speaking in regards to the sheridan server. To bad. That's how it's been forever.  Learn to adapt to it or choose not to play there I guess. The whole idea of the sheridan mod is to stay alive as long as you can racking up a streak of frags to hit the bulletined score.

I'm o.k. now. I was having issues programming some new AI and added to my frustration that someone on that server was preying on a 150 latancy HPB. I had literally dropped my power shield and switched to the blaster to make it a fair fight when someone came in just to play like a jerk off.

I used to hold much the same view you do, but I came to realize is that it's divisive property is actually a good thing for the game overall - playing with ps on on vanilla maps is a vastly different experience than the more fast-paced dm. I think that having this kind of variety is healthy, so I stand that if you don't like the ps, don't play on servers with it. And if you sometimes want a more tactical cat-vs-mouse game, go to a server that does.

Exactly. You can have some intense battles there given it's vs a player with some idea of recollecting armor and health. Before a month or so ago I don't remember the last time I died to another player that wasn't due to a telefrag. But it happened finally when I was completely shit faced vs Ely. I want a rematch, I'm sober hehe. But still it was a 45 minute match with zero kills each haha. Seeing two blurry monitors when I only run one wasn't helping my aim.

I look forward to the next battle vs Ely or Def, they're always good intense ones. The challenge is nice and that's what that server is all about. Even though I was drunk I was really pumped somebody was able to kill me, it was a good night.

oh shit.. and here I thought deathmatch was considered FFA..

if FFA = Free For All, wouldn't that in a sense suggest that it's "Free For All" to play however they see fit?

I know some people want to play "ethical" and all, but the most noticable "ethical" players seem to be the ones that whine the most.
