Control Preferences

I was curious as to how most of you have your keyboards laid out; I myself use a very unorthodox controls schema for all FPS games I play that have mouselook (Which has garnered some very amusing expressions at LAN parties):
I find using the D-pad to move/strafe extremely intuitive, and I can play for hours on end and have absolutely no hand strain.
I make all this work by using the program
JoyToKey
to bind simulated key strokes to my PSX controller, and I aim/fire/switch weapons with the mouse in my right hand (Wheel mouse): this gives me a total of 13 actions that I can easily reach with both hands at any given time.
The "Shit Talk" buttons require some reaching, but I typically only use them in relative safety, or at the end of a match.

Those controllers (imo) are what ruin all FPS games on consoles.

Only console that did 3d shooters right was N64 and even that is a big handicap.
And I agree that the PS style joystick ruined console gaming beyond repair.

Eh, n64 controls were terrible, the only thing that keeps console fps alive is the double joystick movement...

That's what a cfg is for, you can make any shaped 'controller' that you want, as long as it lays flat :>

I used to use arrow keys but 2 problems always bothered me.
#1 the keyboard has to be moved to the left when I started playing I tended to knock things off the desk
#2 Everytime I used kp_end or kp_ins I could no longer strafe right.
It was Aq2 that got me using w-a-s-d setup. Here's a sample of my config and why it is that way
//Movement
bind w "+forward"
bind s "+back"
bind a "+moveleft"
bind d "+moveright"
bind SPACE "+moveup"
bind SHIFT "+movedown"
//Mouse
bind mouse1 "+attack"
bind mouse2 "+moveup"
//Inventory
bind e "invprev"
bind r "invnext"
bind z "invuse"
bind x "invdrop"
bind MWHEELUP "invnext"
bind MWHEELDOWN "invprev"
bind mouse3 "invuse"
Inventory is controlled immediatly below my movement making shortcuts to weapons mostly pointless.
There is a time or 2 when it selects the weapon i just picked up and i have to navigate my items yet again but almost every single time you want to switch a weapon it's one you already have. And if you're running out of slugs, you have plenty of time to select your next weapon.
Pinky is free to duck and in aq2 ctrl is used to an alias that attempts to use all the weapons at once so it ends up using the most powerful
the keys q, f, c, v,

Arrow keys ftw.
Yes you need to push your keyboard forward and to the left.
arrow keys to move
/ = my jump key
' = crouch
shift = ssg
My mouse does everything else.
Left click = fire
Right click = change to rail gun
Middle click = change to chaingun
Scroll wheel = scrolls through weapons
Side mouse4 button = rocket launcher
Side mouse5 button = grenade launcher
