Why we play

I've been thinking about the appeal of quake 2 lately, now that its August 2007 and I've reached my 8th year of playing.  I think this game, more than any other I've found, taps into the primal instincts we have to hunt, kill, and survive.  If you think about it, these instincts are mostly repressed during modern times.  We don't need to hunt to eat any more and we have no fear of any predators.  It just feels good to indulge these instinctual urges through something harmless like a video game.  I'm sure there are other reasons like the community and the competition of it, but I really do think these instincts are a big factor in making quake 2 as addictive as it is.

This post may be a little too philosophical, and maybe there was a similar post in the past that just got stuck in my head.  Anyway, after racking up hundreds of thousands of frags and deaths over the last 8 years, it's just something I was reflecting on.

Hmm... Why do I like playing. My girlfriends asks me this a lot... out of all the fancy FPS's out there I choose this one. It's not like I've been playing for 8-9 years. Perhaps 3 years at the most... I think about this and I am pretty sure it comes down to two things.

It's fast paced. Q2 is amazingly fast paced compared to a lot of FPS's out there.

The competition. Maybe this would be a turn off to a lot of FPS players but I enjoy the elitest assholes that play Quake 2 and man, there's a shit load of them. Their fun to play because they do tend to give you a challenge and when you beat them it's great to realize you dented their ultimate Q2 ego.

hmm, it is fun to sit in a room and try to defend yourself from an attacker, and to hunt people down and kill them.

i agree with ghost.....i am feeling uncreative (because i havent smoked in a month) or else i would add my own thoughts....but yea "what he said"

another reason i played was to express my creative side....you can go around playing q2dm1 really smart and not making a lot of noise but whenever i got high i felt the need to try crazy shit whether it be movements or my sick ass rail aim...understand that....i havent played in a while but yo my rail is still SICK SON

I find that we play according to our personality and with a great deal less societal pressure than if it weren

I day dream about killing a lot. Was in the Army and never got to kill someone. Now some might find that an ignorant comment, since it is, its still my personal feeling. Ironic how soldiers how have taken lives tend to regret it, I feel bad cause I didn't do it. But like Ghost said, instincts......

Maybe I'll get lucky someday. In conclusion, yes....this game has been around for ages and there's still a very good community.

Quake II was the first game I started playing when I finally got broadband (I used to play 1-on-1 Doom 2 on a 14.4 modem back in the day, but that doesn't count) in 2003, and I keep coming back to it.

I built a Core 2 Duo rig about a month ago and started using EGL+High Resolution Textures, and I'm more engrossed by it than ever due to the pure sex of how it can look and run now. Despite having a ton of legitimately purchased FPS games (Including Quake 3), I only play Q2 regularly. There's just something about this damn game that's had me addicted for going on 4 years now.
