So, I'm using Kubuntu and would like to install Q2.

In the past I have just used the Icculus installer with my retail Q2 CD.  Well, now I don't have that CD, I just have the DVD that came with Q4 with Q2 plus the Reckoning and Ground Zero on it, and this won't work with that installer.

So, I'm wondering exactly how I should go about this.

Thanks ^_^

It's been years since I did it, but I remember copying the files from install/data/ to a new quake2 directory, downloading the latest quake 2 linux binaries, extracting them, and just running quake2.  However, id's client is old, and may not work properly for certain things.  There's probably lots of clients out there now, one that I remember is sdlquake2, http://koti.mbnet.fi/~turol/sdlquake2/.

I think this page might help too: http://db.ilug-bom.org.in/Documentation/HOWTO/Quake-HOWTO-3.html

Thanks, I'll see what I can do with SDLQuake2.  It doesn't look like it's been updated since 2005 though.

So, I finally stopped being lazy and got Quetoo installed, lol.

Well I seem to have everything installed and working correctly, but i have a couple problems.

1.  I can't see my gun, this is very annoying to me and as far as I can tell the settings are correct.

2.  I can't change my model/skin, it's always male/grunt no matter what I change it too.

3.  I can't change my crosshair, though this isn't all that important to me.

Thanks for any help you can provide ^_^

Perhaps it's something to do with some extra pak files you have?  From the configuration, you should have a weapon model on the right side, since you have "hand 0" there.

You could check http://console.planetquake.gamespy.com/commands/quake_2.html, but I don't think there's anything else in the console that would determine whether you have a gun model or not.  I'm not sure what else to suggest. :sorry:

Thanks, it seems that my config is missing cl_gun "1".  I added it and saved the config, but when I start Quetoo it just seems to delete that entry.  Also tried to set it from the console and it did nothing. :-\

Any ideas?

I'd recommend renaming config.cfg to something else (such as myconfig.cfg), and creating a new read-only config.cfg that calls it (with, say, "exec myconfig.cfg").

Just to let you know:
I am a Linux user, too (Debian). I tried quetoo and couldn't see my gun either; I appear to remember I read something about it being so on purpose! I dislike it, however.

Anyway, I recommend aprq2 (Maniac's quake2 client), because it has more features than any other client, runs very well, now also supports independent physics and compiles very easily - in contrast to r1q2 which always gives lots of trouble when trying to compile it (in Linux AND in windows!). In contrast to r1q2, aprq2 also has considerably better sound support for Linux users (opensound, ALSA, SDL, openal), while r1q2 just offers opensound and maybe openal (but not without some trouble getting the code compiled). - Well, actually, I managed to mix sdlquake2 and r1q2 code, and now I also have sdl sound in r1q2. ;-)

Back to quetoo:
Would be a nice client, if not for the invisible gun
and moreover
if the console text could be resized (something like gl_scale) - I hate stressing my eyes with tiny text!

Just my two cents

Well, I've decided to give aprq2 a try then.

Just running into one problem, what exactly do I need here to get past this error when compiling :-\

Hello, Solo_Senshi,

judging from your error messages, it looks like you are missing some development packages.

In my Debian system, xf86dga.h can be found in a package called x11proto-xf86dga-dev, while xf86vmode.h is part of the package x11proto-xf86vidmode-dev.

There might be more packages missing, but then you should get the corresponding error messages, too.

Hope, you succeed in compiling AprQ2 - if you have any further questions, I will try to help you.

Thanks, I installed those packages and got past that part, now I'm getting this,

Code: [Select]
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXxf86dga
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [releasei386/aq2] Error 1

make: *** [release] Error 2

So... what package do I need now :-\

I tried googleing for it, but didn't really didn't find anything ( that I usnderstood >_> ).

This time, it is a linker problem.

Did you do a clean compile? I mean, did you "make clean" and only then "make" again?

At any rate, do you have a package "libxxf86dga-dev" installed? (because this is where the library Xxf86dga can be found).

Till your next error :-) or maybe NOT...
