I got the new card and it seems to have fixed the problem.  Which is a good thing.  Now, when I run q2, the game feels very different.  I assumed it would, going from an old Radeon 128 to this new 7600 Gforce 512. 

Any input on game tweeks to make this feel right?  By not feeling right, I would discribe it as, when moving fast the game seems to skip ahead.  Almost like it skips frames, but a little different.  Hard to discribe in words.

I have turned v-sync off.  I did mess with my cl_maxfps and other similar stuff.  Someone mentioned to me that I may need to mess with the setting in the q2 drivers that are involved with r1q2.  I probably did phase that right, but someone may know what I am 'trying' to imply. 

For example my cl_maxfps is set at 90, should I also be concerned about r_maxfps?  Should those values be the same?  The guy who mentioned it to me, has those values set very differently to get the feel he enjoys. 

Just threw a new card in my friends machine and got him started on Quake. He gets the frame problems you're talking about. Anyone know any tricks?

Running newest R1Q2 and R1GL. Pretty much stock config...
Computer is Vista Home, Dual Core, 1GB RAM, 6800GTX 256MB on a Gateway Wide Screen LCD.

i use a cl_maxfps and a r_maxfps of 126 and feel like i "fly" in jumps and off of ledges or lips, and like the speed in jump strafing/running.

Q2 was sort of doing that to me on this new HP (m8020n), it would jerk, or seem to skip a frame or something everytime i jumped, or turned, looked around whatever... i had to enable "sync every frame", then it ran perfect. weird, though, never had to use that on any other PC, but if it works it works i guess!   :D

I would recommend turning v-sync on using

gl_swapinterval 1

and locking the refresh rate of your monitor as high as it will go.
then set your cl_maxfps to approximately the same value as your refresh rate.


this makes q2 incredibly smooth.

I agree with dervish, the best results I get are with the following:

vid_ref "r1gl"
set framerate 60
set cl_maxfps 120
gl_swapinterval "1"

I use the r1gl client from http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/r1gl/
