I would like to use firefox, but ie loads much faster for me.  if I run ie for a while, I'll end up with something unwanted on my pc, firefox not so much, and I won't run an activex control, unless it's signed and i know what it is.

and yes I use IE over firefox because of the speed difference.

If you don't mind repeatedly helping things thru the pop up blocker and saying yes to verify that you want whatever the hell script or active-x control to run, then IE is pretty ok for browsing. 


I am getting a bit fed up with the internet-ad industry's repeated attempts to circumvent the security controls and pop up blockers. I thought the internet was annoying to look upon before, when there were a shitload of banners on everything.
Now it's starting to piss me off, that I can't read the news without being bombed with 2 pages of fully animated ads for every one page of actual content that I wanted to see.
..and those goddam ad-and-redirect pages. dont get me started on those.


Do I really want to download a 10mb flash advert, that takes up half of my Yahoo page, for some acne remover that doesn't work or a diet pill that's entirely made of speed, every fucking time I log on to check my mail and the news?

well said dervish.  I hate those flash and java banners that fly across the page, and take a while to animate for the x to appear.  Even if I was interested in the product they had to sell, id never buy it because of the annoyance of their advertising.

that file adsdru.dll is in use even in safe mode, and when I tried to remove pmkjjif.dll hijackthis gave me an error

That looks like Vundo / Virtumonde.  (The filenames like adsdru will be random, but the BHO + WinLogin Notify combo is a giveaway.)

I found that nasty p.o.s. on my system a few months ago.  It was very hard to remove.

There's a tool specifically written to remove it, VundoFix:

However, even VundoFix couldn't successfully delete it on my system.  I had to boot into the XP Recovery Console and manually delete the files.  (This is not the same as the "safe mode console".)

BTW, I am generally VERY careful while browsing the web, and was very surprised to find this on my system.  However, it turns out Virtumonde exploits a bug in old versions of Java.  So just merely visiting a page that had a java applet on it would be enough for it to infect your system, (if your system still had an older version of Java, which I did.)

So, yes, it is possible to be very careful and still get infected by these f'n things...

Yeah that's gonna be a pain to get rid of.

As for Flash ads, just disable Flash and you won't see them anymore.

And whatever browser you choose to use, disable the Java plugin for it.  99.9% of the time you're not going to need it, and it just opens you up to exploits.  And stick to getting your porn from torrent trackers or newsgroups, it's much safer that way.

I've been lucky to never have been infected with anything during my years of using Windows.  And now that I just switched completely over to Linux, I'm not going to have to worry about it at all.  This is my first post from Kubuntu, spent the last couple of days getting things setup correctly.  Would've only been one day, but I had to go to work

I don't see much difference in security as far as linux vs windows is concerned.

you should have a firewall for both, exploits aren't a windows only issue. there are listening sockets on linux, just as windows, so you have the possibility of something like the blaster worm.

you can choose not to use ie with windows, and security problems don't vanish by using another browser, so you have to take diligence, in your configuration , and browsing habits

if there is any difference in security, it's that the *nix code is more secure, and i'm pretty sure that's debateble, either way it doesn't take away from the fact, you should have a firewall for both, and exercise viligance in security.

I'm not saying linux is bad, but it sounds like your saying something is wrong with windows, and linux is the fix.
personally I don't really care, I've never had a virus with windows, but I should back my shit up.  still I would much rather use linux, but it's just a pain for my needs.
