On the subject of the VT shooting, let us take a quick look at one of it's surviving students, Wayne Chiang:

This man has many things in common with the deceased Cho. Asian, student, just broke up with girlfriend, and attended the same school. The dealbreaker? This guy has guns. Lots of them. Guns with higher capacity magazines and bigger calibers, and scarier names. What those two people did _not_ have in common was targets. While Wayne enjoys shooting paper and computer monitors, Cho decided that people would be his preferred targets.

It's like the modern version of Goofus and Gallant. Human intent drives these tragedies. I fifteen round magazine in the right hands can save lives, and a ten round mag in the wrong hands can slaughter innocents.

The human tendency towards blaming objects is an irresponsible one. It absolves the shooters of their responsibility. They make arguments like these because they want to live in a dream-world where people won't hurt them if they just get rid of all the things that sound scary. This is not true.

Not many people are afraid of fertilizer. But consider the potential toll in human life at the WTC bombing in 1993 whose 6 dead and 1,042 injured could just have easily been 1,042 dead and 6 injured if the terrorists had achieved their goal of collapsing the building.

No one called for the dismantling of all aircraft in the United States after the 9/11 attacks, but they _did_ turn their attentions towards my hair gel (container of 3.1oz where no container larger than 3oz is allowed), and our collective toenail clippers and box-cutting implements.

Did not instill an pervasive fear of automobiles in America, in spite of it's 80 killed and 200 injured.

I could go on and on but the point is this: Human intent was behind all of these attacks, and people who claim that a box cutter was responsible for 9/11 or that automobiles are responsible for Beirut and the WTC are equally stupid and irresponsible as people who claim that "high-capacity" magazines are responsible for or even facilitated the VT shootings. It would have been just as easy for Cho to buy six 10rd mags as 4 15rd ones. A backpack holds plenty of reloads, and when your targets are completely unable to resist, the capacity per magazine quickly becomes irrelevant.

It's insane to attribute that shooting to anyone or anything but Cho Seung-Hui. I think that the survivors should be grateful that he was interested in pistols instead of fertilizer.

having a gram of coc' in your pocket doesn't give you the power to kill someone now does it.

and PS - drugs are fucking EVERYWHERE, regulation doesn't do as much as you imply.

the whole point here to me, is that criminals can get ahold of a gun quite easily. why should it be harder for a law-abiding citizen to obtain one?

A gun is a tool. No better, no worse than any other tool. An axe, a shovel, or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.

a quick response. Is it impossible to get illegal drugs in any major city? No. If guns were outlawed would it be possible to get them in every major city? Yes. So lets think if we ban guns, only criminals will get them. This would also make the gun market's economy go through the roof. I have a concealed weapons permit in 4 states and I have been thoughouly trained on the proper uses of many firearms. When have I ever shot my weapons? Besides in the military, only at the range. I was givening a class on the proper way to shoot a pistol and rifle. Competitive shooting is a hobby of mine. Responsibility comes with firearms and it seems only the people that have not been trained in the proper technices do stupid things with firearms. Go to a shooting range. I feel exteremly safe there because no one there does anything unsafe. Now go find the punk that got a gun on the street. I feel worried that he may hurt me or someone else. If I have my weapon with me, I know I will take him down extremely fast neutralizing the threat. If you ban guns, that person will still have a gun, and I won't. Meaning the threat is much greater.
