Actually, I just took a test in AP Psychology about intelligence, so I would like to argue!!

I'm taking this straight out of the book:

"After putting the issue of cause aside, when comparing groups of people on any characteristic, keep in mind that differences within groups generally dwarf differences between groups. In other words, within any one group will be more diversity than between any two groups. Practically speaking, if we find that boys perform better on a certain test than girls do, more of a difference will exist between the highest scoring boy and the lowest scoring boy than between the average boy and the average girl. Furthermore, knowing that boys generally outperform girls on this test tells us nothing about the performance of any particular girl compared with the performance of any particular boy. Therefore, we need to be careful about how we use information about differences between groups. Essentially, we should not use it. We should IGNORE it and EVALUATE EACH PERSON, regardless of a group membership, as an individual."

"The definition of intelligence remains hotly debated and many factors affect people's performances on tests. Thus, we need to take care not to ascribe too great a meaning to a test score.  Many schools that used to measure all their student's IQs periodically have abandoned that practice. Sure, last year the top ten students in the class of 2006 were all male, however, there have been years where the top ten were a mixture of male and females and a year with all females. Intelligence = individual measurement, I believe that we shouldn't base it on groups.

Of course I would look for a guy that is as smart, if not, smarter than me. If I didn't, I doubt I'd be able to live with him and spend 'forever' with him.

I took the SAT's and I didn't do as well as I have hoped, but it's because of reasons beyond me being a girl. And even if my scores were low, it doesn't automatically make me 'stupid.'   

By the way, I'm number one in my class. (as of right now) I was also accepted by a rather prestigious school. (and offered scholarship money too!)

I wouldn't put too much stock in this study, and the conclusions of the researchers.

I rarely see an experiment of this sort that has a large enough sampling to make the results legitimate when applied to the human population of the earth. How accurate can it be when there are actually 6.5 billion humans alive today, and the test was on 20,000 of them?

aside from the innapropriately small sample group in the study, the method used to determine their individual stats is highly questionable when applied to the conclusions that they drew.

Test scores are largely useless in determining the overall level of intelligence of an individual or group due to the wide variance between people's definitions of "intelligence" and it's requirements. I doubt the veracity of any research that is based on statistics gleaned from standardized testing of groups of people.

Here's why:

I was in the upper 99th percentile among all students in California when it came to state sponsored standardized student testing.
I've taken multiple IQ tests over the years and they've all had fairly similar results, that were much higher than average.
I even scored reasonably well on the SAT's. (1350/1600)

I don't think this makes me any more intelligent than most people, even though the average person's test scores are lower.
I'm just better at taking tests than a lot of people.


I was a shitty student and as such, I was nowhere near the top of my class.

There were plenty of people that actually did their homework and had a higher GPA.
I consider these people to be more intelligent than I am, in a way, because they were capable of making the decision to further their own causes through bullshit busywork that I couldn't bring myself to do..

They might not have done nearly as well on the tests, but in the grand scheme of things (ye old real world) they are more capable of succeeding and by this I would say that they are more intelligent than I.

The main reason that my test scores were exceptional is that I read almost everything I could get my hands on, and I posess a photographic memory when it comes to reading books. I can remember the answer in context, and usually even where it was on the page, or it's general position in the chapters I read. I wasn't all that much better at history/math/science than other kids, and I wasn't smarter, I just had a more organized and accessible memory of the things we were supposed to be learning.

This ability allowed me to score very highly on academic tests while maintaining mediocre grades in school..


I think the real test of any human (and their intelligence) should not be based on test taking abilities, or any other subjective aptitude measurement (like grades).

Bigger is not always better, just as less is not always bad.
Likewise, people who can ace tests are not all geniuses, and people who test poorly are not always less intelligent than those who do well on those same tests.

I feel that intelligence would be much more accurately described like this:

"the ability to solve problems, extrapolate the effects of actions and place a pertinent level of value upon those effects"

This study seems to equate intelligence with this:

"the ability to score within an arbitrary range of percentages that has been deemed desireable on a test of specific knowledge"


They draw no distinction between intelligence and knowledge and this is my major beef with their results.

given i only skim paragraphs more than 10 lines, i dont think mya was claiming to be intelligent.. she did say that the reason she did well was that she read quite a bit... grades reflect effort.. in most cases.

I'm not claiming to be intelligent. I'm just saying, don't compare intelligence based on groups, base it on the individual.

Guys at my school really look down on girls. "The kitchen is where they belong... etc." and it pisses me off. Women can succeed in any field they choose, if they put their heart to it, same with guys. Men are just as responsible for cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children as the women are.

I believe that we all have different intelligences. Like...although generally, guys are better at math, that doesn't mean that girls cannot succeed in math/science fields. It's all based on the individual. 

It's a good thing its not all just about tests, colleges do consider extracurriculars, recommendations, class rank, and GPA on top of the SAT & ACT scores.  If they didn't, then I probably wouldn't have gotten into a good college. I didn't slack off on my schoolwork and even though I procrastinated occasionally, I always got the job done.

Also, I personally believe we need some kind of emotional intelligence and positive personality to succeed. Without it, all of the other 'intelligences' one possesses are a waste. One must have the ability to get along with others and have confidence in oneself as well as patience.. etc.
