i just got a kvm switch so i could switch between my new and old computer
i got it hooked up right, my new computer works fine however my old doesnt

it detects the monitor, but not the mouse and keyboard, its a 2 port USB tk-207 made by TRENDnet
the old computer can detect the mosue and keyboard if i directly connect them to the old computer
i also tried switching the cables on the kvm, and it still doesnt do it

i was wondering if anyone has any experience with this sorta thing?

Has the kvm switch ps/2 and usb ports ? if so then use only ps/2 ports or only usb ports.

Are you using the original kvm cables ?

The cables you use are they not too long ?

Do you use a new keyboard/mouse from your new computer set (from ps/2 keyboard/mouse to usb keyboard/mouse) ? if so install the keyboard/mouse drivers on the old computer and enable all the usb settings in your old computer bios. You say that the old computer detects the keyboard and mouse. Is that in windows only or in bios post (Power On Self Test) screens also ?

they are 100% usb mouse and keyboard by logitech
both computer have the drivers installed

im using the original kvm cables that came with the kvm switch, and there about 4ft long
which is ok since the computers are close together

i know they work in windows on the old computer when connected directly, i was going to see if it was detecting them in the bios
im pretty sure if its connected indirectly that it doesnt detect them in the bios cus the light on the kvm switch doesnt stop blinking until it works

Do you have tried to switch outputs instead switching cables ?

For example :

new computer at output 1 (video output 1, keyboard output 1, mouse output 1) to output 2 (video output 2, keyboard output 2, mouse output 2)

old computer at output 2 (video output 2, keyboard output 2, mouse output 2) to output 1 (video output 1, keyboard output 1, mouse output 1)

Have you tried all the usb ports on your old computer ?

Do you have more devices connected to your old computer usb ports ? if so disconnect them temporary for testing keyboard/mouse

irq problems on your old computer ? (assign a irq to your usb controller)

Do you switch the view from the new computer to the old computer with the hardware button or with the keyboard key code (for example ctrl, ctrl enter or scroll lock scroll lock) ?

Maybe your old computer usb ports are not delivering enough power for your keyboard/mouse and the kvm switch. Connect a power adapter (check if it has the right voltage) at the adapter connector on your kvm switch.

i have tried the first thing, didnt work
my old computer only has 2 usb ports, and nothing else is using them

im not sure about irq problems

i use the button on the kvm switch to switch them, but it has software too

Are the numlock, capslock and scroll lock lights still working (can you switch lights on and off) when you switch to your old computer ?

Do you have tried totally shut down you old computer and starting it up again ?

Do you have tried disconnect all the kabels from the kvm switch, wait a few seconds and connect them all back again ?

the lock keys do not work, but the lights are on for it and my mouse
i have totally shut down the computer a number of times, its currently off

i havent tried disconnecting all the cables, but if this were true than my new computer would not work either

Disconnect all the cables from the kvm switch is a way to reset the kvm switch.

And have you tried this :

i have disconnected all cables and reconnected them, still nothing
the kvm switch has no power adapter port, its run totally from power through usb

iv found something very interesting, it DOES WORK during post and i was able to get into my bios with it
so there for, something is not happening during windows boot that makes it not work with the kvm

Do you have tried the kvm client switching software on the old computer ?

While on windows desktop at your old computer, disconnect and reconnect the cable between the old computer usb port and the kvm switch to see if windows detects new hardware (the kvm switch of course)

maybe you can use the new hardware wizard on the old computer to detect the kvm switch.

What windows do you use on your old computer ? All windows 95 versions, windows 98 "first edition" and windows nt (before windows 2000) are having problems with usb.

i did install it on the old

hmm i can disconnect the mouse from the kvm switch and connect it to the old computer so i can actually get to the desktop
then i should be able to get it to work

i use windows xp, and it now works
i connected my mouse directly to the computer and was able to have the found new hardware wizard detect it
many thanks i dont know why i didnt think of that
