Windows vs Linux
« on: July 01, 2005, 04:15:48 PM »
Ok...So I'm a bit slow. I just attempted to upgrade to Windows XP and have been having nothing but problems ever since...things that I never had issues with in Windows 2000. So, since I'm tired of running the same old OS and am in need of change...I figured I'd hit the gaming community with the question of which operating system they like the best. Linux looks nice but is it easy to use? Windows XP is real easy to use and is pretty fast, but seems like its not very stable?
Lets hear what you all think, since I know that there has to be some ex-Windows turned Linux users out there.

I certainly wouldn't call that an upgrade. I'm afraid win2kpro is the best that MS can do, with NT next.

XP takes some getting used to! Give it a little time and you'll never go back to anything else  :)

IMO XP sucks ass... like Art sez, thats not an upgrade  ;) linux is certainly not as easy as windows.. but there are a few versions that are pretty simple (Lindows [linux+windows] is basically a stripped down version of windows.. but its pretty hard to find.. ive heard good things though)

dude iv been using windows xp for 2 years now
and i will never go back :) its very stable. no crashes at all. except with a few buggy programs
but not windows :) you can always try out a dual boot and and have them both running if you cant decide

bottom line is winxp > any older version of windows

I've always used Windows, XP has always been stable for me, I never seem to have all the problems others do.

I've tried out versions of Linux, but I can't seem to get the hang of them.  Windows has never let me down though, so I'll stick with it.

Just make sure your completely updated with SP2 and everything.

I primarly use WinXp, but if you are in the market for Linux...  try Gentoo (http://www.gentoo.org/) I like it, and it runs really well.  but it'll take some time to set up.

its true :) how can a computer with winxp work and one not? they all should work without problems
it has to be user error

It can happen easily.

Seriously -  I'm not trying to get anything goin here and I'm assuming (oooo there's that word ass/u/me) your serioius,
there can be lots of factors. Stablity is dependent on many things.

Sometimes just a simple diffrence between two runs of chips (cpu's, memories, cmos, etc)
can make a diffrence in the stability of a box.

Poor case design, fans blocked by cables all  = poor air flow = poor cooling can give you problems almost impossible
to find. A flaky, erratic power supply causes more problems than people have any idea of.

Add these things to OS's that have poor error recovery and viola! You have BSODs etc.

I can give you one good example of a problem I've never been able to figure yet. On my linux box I can connect to every tastyspleen server and get fragged all day long - except for the tourney server. There I can connect but just as soon as I touch the mouse or a key, I get a sig 11 and q2 dumps me back to X.  It happens on the FAS servers as well. A sig 11 can be caused by many things but  I've no idea of what is going on and even though it happens on those servers EVERY time I connect, because it doesn't happen on any server in the world that I've connected to other than those,  I've no way of figuring it out.

In all the years I've been dealing with electronics -  (I was a com officer  in the '60s) including degiin and repair I've learned one thing. Electronic devices, 'specially computers are more unstable than a snowball on a hotplate. :)

I tried Gentoo, or tried to try Gentoo, couldn't figure out the installation.  :D
I've tried Mandrake, Ubuntu, Slackware, Gentoo, among others.  I just can't get the hang of it, but not a big deal, I loves me Windows.

i guess i have a good system then :) even after i replaced almost all the parts in my computer it still runs without problems

I custom built mine, it runs great.  What QuakeDuke says is very true.  I haven't seen a BSOD in years though, not since I used Win98.

They do, there's an options to have them display or automatically restart your comp, auto restart is default.
I haven't even had that happen :P
