We need some new maps on Vanilla
« on: February 01, 2007, 05:10:20 PM »
No I don't mean the stock maps that are on rotation (base1--->Q2DM8) but the alternate maps like Japang, Worn, Wtf!2 etc. Hell I'll even play some of the other Koth maps. Can we put in a fresh batch of 10 or so of alt maps. I just can't play BigSpaceGun anymore........

A much needed and appreciated suggestion.

I would recommend some of the pygmy maps and if we could the xatrix ones(without the special weapons of course--even though traps would become an instant vanilla fav i have no doubt)----most all of the mutant maps are just not made for the 8+ players on vanilla.

Who doesn't moan when some of the maps are mymapped.

I'm amenable to suggestions.

Here are the basic criteria for custom maps on vanilla:

  1. uses stock textures and envs
  2. supports lots of players
  3. not an ENORMOUS download (like sewer64 / spogsp1)

If it weren't for the third point, vanilla would already have city64 / sewer64 / spogsp1...

But I've watched some poor high-ping bastard literally take 45 minutes to download hub.bsp.  So I'm trying to be kind to these folks.  But I have almost caved in and added city64 to vanilla, a few times.

Although I think some of the xatrix maps are great, I somewhat doubt we can legally host them on vanilla. They are part of a commercial mod. :(

But anyway, suggestions are welcome for maps that at least cover points 1. and 2.  Point 3. may be negotiable.

BTW... here's a partial list of maps we've tried on vanilla over the years...
Code: [Select]
4u2map3         -- warehouse ][ ... very warehousey
4u2map7b        -- gameplay so-so with lots of players
ad_mortem       -- looks nice, kind of cramped, hallways
ancient         -- unique, sprawling, so-so gameplay
apq2dm1         -- seems nice, large, but somewhat tedious gameplay
areaf           -- spammy with lots of players
auh2dm2         -- so-so gameplay
arma5           -- one of my top candidates, but want to patch so door opens from both sides
battle          -- nice architecture, weak gameplay
broken3         -- not bad, a little small
bugdm9          -- kind of annoying, spammy
bw              -- old ctf map, might be fun with full server
castle          -- nice looking but small
cold            -- not bad, some ppl liked, some complained
confess         -- not bad, a little spammy
craybox         -- might be fun, beware the lava frogs
cxdm5           -- small
dm4ishq2        -- a little small
eagle           -- nice, probably small
fact0           -- not bad
fink0dm2        -- a little weird but should work
fragzone        -- should work
frdm3           -- not too bad, a little spammy
funhouse        -- unique, but gameplay is so-so
gdm8_q2         -- looks nice, but some have complained about it
gladdm5         -- so-so, ceiling arches too low for strafe jumping
gomdm1          -- so-so, somewhat poorly connected areas
gr_dm3_1        -- unusual, a little cramped, some complaints
gun_q2          -- kind of annoying, deadend halls w/ teleporters
hipdm1          -- kinda fun, outdoor ramps, lots of entities in view
homers12        -- so-so, fun, some complaints
iceland         -- looks nice, cramped, some complaints
icepick1        -- very blue, average gameplay
idcbase3        -- kind of fun, a bit cramped
iodine1         -- the bug vile, pretty fun, a little cramped
ikdm6           -- too spammy with lots of players
jdm3            -- weird, but kinda fun
joyride         -- not bad but spammy with lots of players
mas2ft1         -- not bad, fun
mdm2            -- not too bad
mkfutile        -- not bad, but a bit small
nastybox        -- kind of fun, but very small
outpost         -- fun with lots of players, large download
paradm4         -- very nice, possibly a little small
predm1          -- removed from vanilla because of complaints
pinhole         -- looks nice, but gameplay is so-so
q2sdm1          -- boring version of jail4
raydm2          -- not bad
rene45          -- nice looking but small
rqmdm1          -- too big, gameplay suffers
rqmdm3          -- gameplay so-so
simple          -- a little spammy
soahc7          -- looks nice, a little spammy
towers2         -- nice except for stupidly designed rail camp
trdm03a         -- looks nice, gameplay so-so
trdm06          -- gameplay not terrible, not great
tuckersluck     -- should work pretty well
twofold         -- i kind of like, but some have complained about it
unrdm1          -- moebius trip, nice
valley          -- a little cramped
vd6dm1          -- not bad
ww_3            -- vaguely annoying gameplay

A few of these have been on my short list to bring back to vanilla, such as arma5 and tuckersluck (and mabye unrdm1, mas2ft1, and a couple others.)

Well with a name like "tuckersluck" its automatically in. How about 1 or 2 of the Fragtown maps (I know - custom textures).

Certainly with there being so few in the community the people even on dial up would be willing to wait for it if they didnt go download the maps off the page.----Easy for me to say though.

But that notwithstanding,   predm1,hub,fusion,city64, sewer64, and probably ancient would be fun maps to get to learn --- i bet they would become mymap favorites (which at first would empty out the server  :( --- maybe a slow integration of new maps)

people seem to be missing the point of what the vanilla server is
VANILLA SINGLE PLAYER MAPS ONLY and WHERE THE NUBS PLAY

if you want custom maps, gotto the mutant server

with that said, i have converted all the xatrix maps (minus xdm7 which is basicly edge)
they all use vanilla ents so they are fully compatible. they can be downloaded from my site here on TS

I have to agree with x'tyfe on this one..

GOTO MUTANT!

There is a huge selection of maps on the mutant server and new ones getting uploaded every week..
It's not as busy as the Vanilla server, but you will definitely get quality opponents to play against as opposed to a huge quantity of not-so-decent players running around like chickens without heads..

I would actually like to see a few different maplist rotations on the mutant server - the same 10-12 always get played - imho, it's getting old -
yes the mymap feature rocks - but more maps = better

oops I just saw th upload your maps post

I will get on that when time permits -
console, you rock

The real value in the alternate maps on Vanilla is that players there don't mind the stock maps, but its a nice surprise element to "mymap" one of these alternate ones here and there and break up the sequence of the stock maps. For example when Launch Command ends you're expecting to spawn somewhere on Outlands but instead are taken somewhere completely different. It seems to hold players around longer because it seems fresher.
