Bandwidth throttling... recommendations?
« on: January 29, 2007, 08:29:52 AM »
Heya.

How would one go about obtaining and implementing a stable bandwidth throttler?

I need to use it to curb my roommates torrent usage because he like to use the FN things all the time to watch TV shows. I've gone as far as to get him a VCRplus set so he can record all his shows that he misses due to work but he still uses torrents for most of it.

I like to game in the morning for a few and just after work. Is there a way to schedule when the throttle takes place?

He uses Azureus as his torrent client and I am running a DLink DI-624 router for our network

Not sure bout the throttler, but you can go into your router, password it, then disconnect him from it at the router when your gaming. Then just reconnect him when your done. Some routers even have internet access schedules built into them.

He uses Azureus as his torrent client and I am running a DLink DI-624 router for our network

First Disconnect his connection. Reboot Your Router. Then Log into your router and disable plug N play. Click OK to restart.

His torrents should then start kicking back errors as the router will not allow any torrent related incoming traffic.

Let me know how it works out.

you could tell him to pause the torrents, i know bittorrnado has this feature. sounds like you need a different router to do what you want.

uTorrent has a scheduling page in the options that he could use to throttle back during "high usage hours" (I use it so I don't piss my parents off in the early morning/late evening before bed time)

This is what I did with my roommate. Just sucked when I forget to set him back up... then he'd start whining.

You could always try out one of the "gaming" routers that filters time sensitive packets and makes them a priority over any thing else. That may be able to solve your problem. Though I haven't tried one myself, I have read good things. Your best bet if he refuses to stop downloading  is to make him cap his upload to something like 10kbs that shouldn't have much of an effect on your gaming. That's what I had to do with my brother who used bit torrent 24/7. Unfortunately there's always a slight effect sometimes even when it doesn't appear to be changing your ping. You will still have some random shot delays longer than others, makes things a pain in the ass :/.

If he refuses to stop torrenting, at least tell him to drop the UPLOAD to the absolute minimum. This is why I ALWAYS LAG cause people at my house also like to hog the internet. The worst part is, they choose to do it WHILE I'M GAMING but don't do it when I'm not...

DM server is fucked. 2 point blank rockets from spawn and lava damage and player survived? WTF?" Also someone has fucked with the spawn points, every single time no matter how big the map you spawn right in front of the person who killed you last
