heyas

i recently found a cheap S-Video to RCA adapters ment for connecting a pc to a tv
iv always wanted to do this, but i knew there where some limitations. iv asked around
and seemed to have gotten all kinds of different information. so its still not totaly clear to me
and i have been unable to find any information on the net concerning this

i just want to be sure what i need to do to get this working

my questions are, can my pc and my tv both have picture at the same time?
and do i have to keep switching between my 1280x1024@85 to a shitty 640x480@60 resolution when i want to use it? or can it be set so they are independent?

what id really like to do is still keep my normal resolution, and have it set so it looks the same on my tv, is that possible at all?

I'm wondering about this myself, since I would like to use an s-vid cable to watch movies in the living room that are on the pc... any help would be great.

Your Resolution for the TV and PC Moniter will be independant from each other.
You can watch on both at the same time, but the TV will only go so high in Resolution.
Windows and your video app does a good job of this.

Just hook up your TV and go into video properties and tell your video card that your secondary moniter is a TV.
The computer will give it the proper resolution, while keeping your moniter set at whatever Resolution you have in set to to begin with.

so i got my cable to today, only to find that not only wasent it long enough, but my video card uses an 8-pin s-video plug
while this cable only has 4 pins

so im hella pissed

i waited a whole week for nothin

anyways, i was wondering if anyone knew of a cable like this http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=415363&CatId=0 but is atleast 24ft long, and connects to a 8-pin plug, although id be very surprised if there was such a thing

if i can just find a 4-pin female to 8-pin male adapter then i should be fine

Did you try the cable?
The cable should work just fine, even though it's "missing" some pins.

k i found an adapter in my desk for this, and connected it and it seems to work, and i can see my desktop fine. however its a blurry and stuff
though thats not really a problem. though because my tv and monitor are different resolutions, the tv will only show a portion of the screen

this is bad for anything that uses full screen, say if im playing quake2 it will only show one quarter of it on my tv, which really defeats the purpose of this altogether
and i wasted my time and money for nothing

thankfully it will automaticily do this for movies, so its not all lost. though id really like to be able to display games on there
is anyone aware of a way to make it not split up my screen like that? im using a nvidia geforce 6600 gt if that helps

What your going to have to do is set your games' resolution to something between 1024x768 - 640x480 in order to see the entire game on screen.

And from personal experience, a TV is not that great for playing PC games on.

ya, after fussin with it, i figured that out

which really sucks
so i do just use it for watching movies and stuff, which is pretty cool on its own

the only problem i have, is the cable i ordered is to short

and im past the amount of time which i can return it
it goes far enough to connect both, but i can easily trip over it if im not careful. but its not like ill be having it connect all the time

I had mine set up to watch movies on my TV with the sound through my receiver. If you tweak your video setings you can usually get a great picture.

I use an ATI radeon 7000 chipset for my PC2TV
And a GForce4 5200 for my games (thanks again Reflex

)

The TV options provided by ATI are preemo!! I tried to run the SVideo from my Nvidia but it just turned out black and white.
