Making My Own Characters?

I haven't been able to find out how to do this. As far as I can understand, making characters for Quake II is making skins or models?

I'm not sure, and that's why I am asking. I've spent lots of time searching these forums, and haven't been able to find the anser I've been looking for.

I want a detailed (tutorial?) on how to do this.

I literally know nothing of it, so be very explanatory.

Thanks for any help, and sorry for being a bother.

Feel free to ask questions here, and I don't think anybody will think you're being a bother =)

As for your question, unfortunately in my 7 years of playing Quake 2 I have never learned how to do what you're inquiring about, so I'm not much help in that department.  I imagine somebody will be able to direct you to the right area so you can get the right information you're seeking.  Good luck.

Check the threads in the section above entitled "skins, models, and maps"

I'm sure they give some pointers about what program to use, etc.

Your player is a model.  Making a model is not something you can just pick up and do.
There are links on how to make a model, I could provid some for you if you are interested.

A skin is exactly what it says.  It is the skin that colors the model.  It's what you see.
It is just a painted pcx file that is wrapped around the model.

you'll probably need a 3d model editor (google Milkshape. it's free and works for q2 models) for starters.

after you make yourself a model for your character, you'll need to place it in multiple positions to create the frames for all of the character animations: shooting, running, dying, getting hit, jumping... (very tedious)

next you'll have to make a skin in .pcx format that covers the planes that make up your model.


it's really not very easy, so I'd suggest finding as many tutorials as you can on google and reading them all until you are pretty familiar with the steps..
