Is this a cheat?

I think it is, but i'm not very clued up on model cheats so, is this a cheat? when the rocket is in motion the line protruding from it gets shorter and shorter to its destination - I found this pak this morning and was like.. wha.. i know the chaingun and invs were cheats, they had huge spikes protruding from them and the CG was super big.

That'd be a cheat in my book.... adding objects or a big visual aid that doesn't exist in any shape or form with default Q2.

You're not "modifying" stuff with this, you're actually adding stuff in that wasn't there to begin with.

It's not going to give the user a HUGE advantage, but yeah, I'd say that qualifies as a cheat.  "Adding something that's not supposed to be there" sums it up pretty good.

Sure it is a huge advantage, the user knows where the rocket is going to hit long before it gets to him so all he has to do is move to where the line isnt and no damage.

And yes it can be blocked by doing a hashe check for the models/objects/rocket/tris.md2 in pak0.

Those things have become widely accepted by the Q2 community and are usually expressly permitted in event rules.

My point was, I find it interesting to see where people draw their line.  Bright skins are something I don't personally agree with, but most people think it's okay.  I don't even think that certain game brightness levels should be considered legal, but since everyone's hardware and drivers are different, it'd be difficult to impose a universal limit.  Yet, some players use values which basically equate to r_fullbright 1, which is considered a cheat (see source code).

Look at it this way: cheats can only enhance or exploit things that are already provided by the game.  Even an aimbot; it uses programatic functionality (trace routines) and data (player positions) already present in Quake.  Item timers again only make use of information the server provides to every client.  Spiked models are clearly "bad," but tiny player models which skew the perceived hitbox of the player have been around since 1998.

It's a dilemma for me especially because I advocate freedom and privacy in computing.  I believe that a person should be able to do whatever they wish with their software.  Hack it, improve it, distribute it, whatever.  But to have a fair game (and I often have to remember that Quake is just that), you must impose limitations and even engage in things which fringe on invasion privacy to keep the playing field level.

The best solution I've come up with, what lets me feel like I'm playing a fair game, is to play with friends that I trust.  And that's about the only way I think it can happen.  That doesn't mean I don't play on public servers with people I don't know.  It just means that I'll never be convinced, without a doubt, that no one on the server has some unfair advantage.  Good thing it's just a game.

The way I see it...

I for the most part aside from running r1q2 play Q2 with all default settings excluding keyboard/mouse binds and aiming sensitivity. My graphics are 100% default, nothing has been adjusted. I don't use bright skins or any of that crap. With me being able to keep up with or pass players that use bright skins and bright video settings etc... I think I have a upper hand on them. I don't rely on a custom pak. and settings to win like they do. They can do what they want... it's not cheating to me but if I'm able to play just as good as them with everything stock, then I believe I'm a better player in sense.

I find it funny you say "rely" on a custom pak, custom paks are merely (minus brightskins) aesthetically pleasing to the users, not usually an advantage.

spiked models

me thinks arent cheats:
brightskins
bright weapon skins
any naturally modifyable video setting.
