Because it's the most versatile and fun map ever made thats why. The map is great whether its 1 person waiting, 1v1, 2v2, 3v3, or 4v4. Its wide open, has tons of jumps, and basically it just rocks. I'm sorry but nobody wants to stand at the top of red armor lift shooting rockets down a lift on dm2, or time quad, or play positions, or do any of the other things that go with organized teamplay in a PICK-UP game.

I like to come home from a long day of work, kick back, and go full speed around dm1 for a few hours playing pick-up. I love the other dm maps as much as anyone (except 4). I think they're great for ffa's, clan scrimmages, and 4v4 matches. But I think its time to face the reality that no Q2 map ever made, and possibly no other FPS map ever made, has even come close to duplicating whatever it is that makes "The Edge" so special.

If somebody finds one, let me know.

The title of this should be Ode of an Edge Head. There are plenty of maps that are just as fun and versatile. q2dm3 is just as versatile quad can be turned off for ones and twos and turned on for threes and fours. dm7 is a fun duel map as well as a pretty interesting map for 4v4. the rage is a great map for 1v1-2v2 and The Crucible is another one of those maps that is fun whether its 1s or 4s or anything in between.

I have nothing against the map itself, but the trend for tourneys to center around this map is rather unhealthy for the community, especially when the basis of this generally seems to be "because everybody knows it". I'm a big supporter of mapping communities and turning out new projects that find a place in tournament play.

Note in q3 how nearly all of the servers run either baseq3 maps or cpma maps... it saddens me. Which is why I play q2 - there is actually a support for custom mappers. Holding on to older maps without taking into account new possibilities would not be the smart thing to do.

All said, dm1 is still a fairly well-designed map, but by no means the end-all-be-all.

to me, edge provides no advantage for any one type of player.. by this i mean, it poses a severe check on players that are all rail, a check on players that rely heavily on chain; as rocket launchers are readily available; and sound is so crucial on the map. armor is also placed very strategically... although, i think rage is pretty much just as good for duels. oh well i'm wasted again

Those are good maps randy but you can't really move on any of them like you can on dm1. They are all small and enclosed.

How fast would you move on chasity or ztn3 if it was played as much as dm1? A: Just as fast as on dm1.

really fast but dm1 you can move fast or faster and it's bigger

Chastity and ztn3 aren't really good for anything more than 2v2. Also, they have no where near the amount of jumps. I like both maps, but I don't think either is really in the same league as dm1.

Edge also has really good item and weapon placement. I like how there are two rocket launchers for re-taking the mega room, two yellow armors (and no red), and plenty of smaller weapons floating around for spawns, like 2 sg's, 2 mg's and lots of hand grenades. You have to put yourself at risk to get any of the more powerful weapons, like the chain steps, water rail, lower rl tunnel, and upper rl ledge. Its just really smart design.

Its amazing to me that the jumps that have been discovered haven't ruined the strategy of the map. If the players of 8 years ago had seen some of the jumps that have been invented, it would have blown their mind (i.e. rail ledge to rockets, hyper lift, and gl to mega ledge are you serious?). Its easy to take forgranted how much online competition has taught us about this single map.

Edge is an extremely well designed map, and the speed of q2 only makes it better. That said i think it is over played.

I didn't get online until August 1999, so I didn't know that those maps (jail1, sp warehouse, and biggun) were ever played like that. That's crazy man.

And yes, it is overplayed. I just wish there was another map as good.
