Question about ping

This has likely been asked before, but I'm too lazy to actually LOOK for other topics on the same subject.

Anyways....What is an acceptable ping in a game?
I have...a less than perfect internet connection.

well that really depends on you and what you're used to.
 

I ping around 45-55 on the TS servers (from Cali to Texas by cable modem)
Above 85 or so, I can't aim for shit anymore, but that's because I'm not used to playing
with a high ping and my aim is piss poor no matter what my connection is like.

Most people I see that are doing well in-game are under 100.
There are exceptions though.
[BTF]Adam destroyed me with a 150ms ping vs. my 50ms the other day.
There are some skilled guys from south america and from europe who play here with high pings (125+) and do quite well.

well, not much worth investing worrying about what an acceptable ping is.  You have what you have.  More important then the number of the ping, is the actual stability of the connection.  a high stable connection will beat a low packet lossy one any day.

The best you can do is do the best with what you have.  And in that case, the best you can ever have is r1q2(with anticheat!).  It has the most superior netcode around, which will actually lower your ping a touch, and make all of life just a touch less challenging.

haunted, was on 28.8k (220 ping) and still owned a lot of low pingers, it's just adapting..

Deth, you need to spectate Disco Ditto and see what he can do with 265 ping.  Check his stats too.   


i awake in the middle of the night at times from a horrible dream i was at a LAN with him.

To be honest, i ping 325 or something on his servers, and i can't say it reduces the fun for me at all.  i would say it slows me down a touch, but if i played at that ping consistently, im sure i could make up a good bit of ground.

Now, a deciding factor in your enjoyment at that ping is the ability to score frags.  And if you are new to the game, that might be a big uphill battle.  However, some time at the Training Camp would give you the information and confidence you need to jump right back in and start forcasting peoples moves and pwning it up like a madman.  That is really all it comes down to at high ping.  You just take a touch more defensive type of play, which is pretty easy in ffa, you can always trick people into chasing you around a corner, even while holding a rocket launcher.  But anyways, my point is, at pings above 150, sounds are EVERYTHING, and you will need to know how to tell where people are, so you can fire on them before you see them.  If you dont know what im talking about, take a look at the Training Camp.

But surely, dont give up hope.  i have played lots of pings from 9 to 1200, and i was normally fine into the 400's.  Beyond that, it wasnt any fun really.  (sorry solo senshi!)

250 is still playable. You will just have to adapt...: Lead your targets, spam, etc.   

Take note though... (I'm assuming you have dial up) Newer games like battlefield 2, quake 4, graw, etc. require a broadband connection. Quake 2 is cool.

I just tried to connect to see how it would go, but it wouldn't connect I guess my phone (Motorolla IDEN) can't do UDP packets or something.

what ever is the smoothest id say
which is below 100, i find anything above that is horrible 

i ping between 50-80 on the ts servers and i do just fine
but you dont have a choice really, tastyspleen has the popular servers

I've got my cell phone connected to the PC and tapping it's net connection.

as for Deth,  I was raised on cable modems since late 1996.

Last year I moved and the only way for me to play was thru a 56k
modem, and AOL.   

Ping on the servers here in texas was around 200,  and I still had
a GREAT time playing.  Lasted about 4 months. (DSL now )

So yeah,  220 ping is still playable in Q2,  I seemed to have the most
fun with the rail servers, but you adjust to the latency and can play anywhere.

Well, it's definitely frustrating, and my kills are....terrible, but it's kind of playable.

Um, is there anywhere I can play online Co-op?
