Ok well I know you probably didn't expect a looooong answer, but if you remember anything about me...well...here's yer long answer.

Yea...life decided I needed a few sneakerprints upside the head, so I've been out for about 2 years (playing the single player game and snoozing while i did...)

And (ok here's where I catch sh*t), my son and daughter got me into...Runescape. I'm completely hooked on the markets and trying to find new angles for working them. (The markets, not my kids...although I've been finding new angles for that too. 16 and 13 year olds havethat in common. Most hate to work.)

Someone suggested I take up Guild Wars or Diablo2..but it wouldn't be the same without the time I spend playing with my wife and kids...ya know? (Yes, we all play now...even the missus.)

I went to the ethics server the other day, waited awhile (I'm used to it) and had some really great games. I wish more folx would just hang out there a bit til it gets going..I'd probably play more. But it's frustrating.

I like old FFA DM with weapstay and none of the "easy" items like BFG and PS. That's hard to find anymore.

Nice to see you back on the circuit, Dafremen.  I remember you helping me a lot a couple of years ago and giving me the 'kung foo' config (sorry I just could never get used to that though I tried).  I remember being impressed with your ethical standards at the time.  Shame we have to come to this tastyspleen forum with all it's idiots and hackers (haunted is now actually an admin on certain ts servers and forums - it defies belief).  There is a 'clique' in this ts community who think they are a cut above the rest and anybody who doesn't agree is ostracised, made to look small and stupid or just plain has their posts deleted/edited.  I hope you get better treatment here than I have had in the past.  It is a very sad reflection on this game which we grew up with and grew to love that the only really populated servers are full of wankers who would screw over their own parents for a cheap frag and then laugh.

I can't stand the vanilla server - it makes me cringe how cheap the 'players' are in there.  The DM server is almost geting to the same stage and, sadly, the once cool xatrix server is slowly going the same way.  I basically restrict myself to the jump servers now to avoid the unholy shittiness which is present-day Q2.

I've never tried the ethics server purely because it is always empty but I'm sure if it ever got populated it would become as shitty as the rest of the ffa ts offerings.

I also find it hypocritical that BTF (that once magnificent clan) sets up this ethics server as if most of their members are not exactly the same as the vanilla idiots.

Ahhhh MUNKEE! Still as cranky, unimpressed and unrelenting with the sh*tbags as usual I see. Yea I always tried to take my own personal sarcasm down about a notch.. (But then they jsut think you can be walked all over huh?) It's hard man. I don't think that unless you can remember when Quake1 first came out...that you can remember the real sense of "Hey! We're in this thing...is this the coolest thing ever or what?!" that used to exist. Now its a bunch of pre-pubescent twits trying to take out on strangers what they don't get from their parents. All chest pounding, all pre-practiced strategy...no art...no nuance...none of the skillz that made a player stand out from the rest.

No, that guy is practically dead. He's been replaced with this arrogant f*ck who thinks that you want to spend the next 15 minutes watching him go between the courtyard and the Mega Room, outscooping you on armor and weps all day because he's got his pattern down. (Like some kind of industrial Chrysler welding bot or something. Rail...chain. Rail....and chain. Then rail....and chain. Again...all together now...rail...then chain. Now grenades to rub in the humiliation and show them how bored you are. Now a blaster.

From an administrative point of view, it seems worthwhile to clarify a couple points here:

Hacking isn't tolerated here.

As far as evaluating someone for an admin position, I try to judge people by their actions since I've personally made their acquaintance.  Sometimes I'll flip a coin and give someone limited admin responsiblity and see how things work out.  Usually it's worked out OK.  We've had a couple people who abused their admin privileges and their admin status was promply revoked.  One guy was even banned entirely.

Although I'll admit to being surprised by haunted's recent admission to having crashed someone's servers in the past, it remains true that I have not received substantive complaints of admin abuse against haunted since he's been here.  (In other words, the actions of any admin periodically generate complaints; however upon investigation of haunted's actions I have not found evidence of abuse or intent to abuse.)

I'd like to remind everyone that the current forum permissions are set such that anyone who starts a thread has the capability of deleting posts in that thread.  This was added to allow people to keep their own threads spam-free if they choose.

However, no-one but moderators has the power to edit someone else's posts.  If you think someone is abusively editing posts, please report it to me.

Well an encrypted key method might actually be plausible. You could use the ip address of the client and the rcon password they currently have set. Each person could be given a different password to use that way too.

i don't see what's wrong with using tcp, and only accepting connections from certain ip's.

i assume rcon runs on it's own udp port, either way (some other application stuff uses the same port) you would gain portability by having this in the q2 code, instead of just adding rules on a firewall.  anyways i've never ran a q2 server or anything, but having no kickplayer sucks, and it's super frustrating when people mess with rcon while your playing

There seem to be several unrelated issues being lumped together here.

The kickplayer issue isn't related to rcon, but to OSP team captains.  Which could be anyone.  So a filtering solution would not seem to be applicable here.  (The security problem is severe enough that you can't wait for someone to abuse it first, then add them to some kind of filter. The first abuse could be deadly.)

Also: rcon doesn't run on its own udp port, it's the server's standard UDP port.

I suggested a UDP solution for filtered rcon rather than TCP, because I suspected it would be easiest to add to existing clients and servers.  (If one wanted to add such a thing.)

Thirdly, if people "mess with rcon" while you're playing, generally that means they have the rcon password.  (If you think anyone on tastyspleen is "messing with rcon" while you're playing, please report the incident to me.)

yeah guess you can't use tcp because you'd have to change the client .  although maybe people who use rcon could have a special client or something..

Well folks use additional clients all the time. The call them nocheat clients. You could easily embed the code into a nocheat client and add the server side stuff to a q2admin-like program...or modify q2admin or the server code. The reason I suggested encrypted key is cuz its hard enough to decode, let alone spoof on the fly.

I thoguht having no rcon set on the server, but rather have it generate a password from the originating IP and the current rcon_password set by the client.

A hacker using normal rcon exploits would be ass out because there would be no rcon_password set on the server. However, a key would be generated by the client and checked against a list of acceptable keys by the server whenever an rcon command is issued and the rcon_password on the client end is <> ""

By generating the keys independently, each client with legitimate access can have his own password. There should be a third part in there that eludes me for the moment. Something about masking it in transit....ni modo watcha gunna do?

P.S. Ok...I thought I saw that in there.

You generate the key at the client side, using the modified anticheat client. That way, the client's IP can change within a certain subnet range xx.xxx.xx.* say.

On the server side is stored the clients subnet mask and his password.

Client side program sets rcon_password to the key at init and if rcon_password is changed.
