Ethics Based Server?

Congrats Gator -- who does play by a higher set of q2 ethics than most. 

But the problem is complicated. 

First of all  I am in favor of this project but I see some detractors. 

No spawn camping     is needed but where do you draw the line ----if i spawn outside on q2dm1 and you are there, you let me live I go to get the railgun when is it fair that you can shoot me when I can shoot you?  seems unfair to the one who didn't die yet.  If quake2 were basketball  then spawn killing    type killing    etc etc   would be if you're on the court you are playing   not that i take spawn kills(depends on the circumstances)  but looking at this objectively    what is the bottom line by the official    you were an active player ---period.

No back to corner kills is nice though

If you take away the bfg where do you stop certainly the chaingun is more deadly, then the railgun, then the rl,   etc. etc. we'll be on the all grenade mod 

And the powerups megahealth invulnerability  quad damage,   armor ,  armorshards  ,   these change the balance of play and maintain it    and make the game more fun    we don't play pacman we play quake2

Even by all the ethics rules that are suggested     certainly if it got reduced to 1v1 there is a wider berth to what is acceptable in that venue   does it hold for 1v1v1 and if so where is the player count to bind players to the original ethics?


We need all the items-- it maintains balance  ,

we need people to play to have fun-- doing what they do to have fun as long as it doesn't ruin other player's fun  ,

we need the good the bad and the ..... controlled ugly    here is what has created this situation --those half a bin of bad appholes who corrupt the game.
      To curb this activity we only need some people who are "admins" who can say or do something to prevent them from doing whatever it is that is unacceptable

     If everyone is policeing everyone else by forums messaging or vote menu it will be worse than giving wetarded or toxicmonkey your home telephone number. 

Ultimately all appropriate action can only be policed by themselves 

but playing on a different server altogether with the ethics MOTD should create the desired environment except for those intentionally trying to disturb others which i believe is many players goal.  I hope it works 

--but who will play there besides BTF       and ive been there --for a long while on dm and mutant before they became popular there would only be polite BTF players and who can beat up on friends ( I have even observed a player let another go 'because he was almost dead')

We all need better players and jerks in the game because it is twice as satisfying when they die.

Ok, to be clear, to date, this is what is set up.

No bfg, quad, invulnerability or powershield.  These are the things that you see the most complaints about.

The vote tab allows votes for maps, hooks, runes, and kicking if i recall correctly.  If i see anything being abused, i will react to it.  i'm waiting to see how much character and integrity can be mustered to make the thing work before i start disallowing options by players.

i am sending out as needed the referee_password, and this is included in the message, so this is what will be EXPECTED of admins:
referee_password for Ethics Server is XXXX.
To use at console, type "ref XXXX".

Current MOTD reads:

Maps are voteable, kicking is voteable.

Please use the ref admin to enforce only the rules stated in the MOTD.  Do not react to any personal attacks fed upon an admin please.  It is ok to react to abuse of the vote option in a measured response.

So that is the bare essentials there.  Everything is open for discussion.  But the rules obviously need to be agreed to, and as stated before, spawing into the game is an agreement of the MOTD.

To reply to comments about the maplist so far, the ref can pick any map the server has, and players can also choose by voting.  It does not work like mymap and play the map next, it will choose it immediately.  So if you are unhappy with the map that you are on, try to coax your fellow players to support your opinion. 

As of yet, i have not seen any action on this server.

i honestly dont think it can get off the ground.  i think most players want to play in a populated server, and dont make an effort to grow a server/community.  i have alot of experience from my past playing with >FAS> on >FAS> servers that ran basically as i have set up so far.  The >FAS> servers had a group of regulars that clearly understood and appreciated the "server rules", although they werent stated in text, they were merely enforced by a >FAS> clan member who was admin.  You would occasionally get an outsider in who would test the rules and be warned, then kicked after continually breaking the rules.  It worked out pretty well.  Majik still puts the servers up from time to time to this day, but i havent seen any of them in action for months.

Momentum is the enemy of this server.  Nobody wants to play alone, so i dont think i'm gonna see enough people hanging out waiting for other players to show up there to get the server off of the ground.

Also, i'd like to reply to the spawnkill dillema.  That will probably have to be decided upon by all playing at the time. 

i would think it would be sufficient to be allowed to live sitting on the pad.  Once off the pad it is fair game.  It only makes you a better player learning to dodge shots.  If you spawn and want to live, better sit there and wait for players to pass then go when the coast looks clear.

One thing I really appreciated about TS was when console(s) put the spawn protect on. It made it possible for us dialupers who are frantically pushing the get the heck off the pad and out of the way button while waiting to spawn to at least get off the pad before getting plugged.

Although I agree with your previous post and I also doubt there will be enough players to really support the idea, I want to say THANKS!.
It's cool to find out if people just like to carp or actually do something about it

Don't give up on this too quickly, Gator. I'm not getting much time to play lately, but I will definitely go to that type server first. Hell, I won't have to learn any new rules. I guess the Q2 world is divided into those who need victories, high scores, or the chance to humiliate someone to get enjoyment and those who truely play for fun and want to see everyone else having fun as well. Due to testosterone, immmaturity, or insecurity or whatever, the former group seems to be the majority - but a place where fun and sportsmanship comes first will attract, hold and convert players. I don't begrudge good players wanting a cutthroat environment. If that's what it takes to enjoy their playing time it's understandable and cool with me. 

I don't know if it will work, but it will never happen if it doesn't get the chance to establish and grow. Good luck with it and I hope to see you there.

No no. Not what I meant. If spawnfrag is a no no there's no need for that. What I meant was those millisecs of proctection usually allowed us laggards time to do something besides spawn and die.

i'd also be willing to help sidestep the spawnkill issue by allowing clients to spawn with a weapon.  This would make two problems.  1. Which weapon?  Shotgun immediately springs to mind, or machinegun.  2.  Adding a weapon at spawn, or even having weapons in different places, completely changes the flow of any stock map.  So that would upset diehard purists no doubt.
