Newbie here . some questions!
« on: November 02, 2006, 11:39:39 AM »
hi
i use quake 2 v3.21 (i used to have v3.20 yestarday)
i play with openGL video option.. it looks better than the software.. but it looks so dark in particular areas and i can't see the enemy . im used to this video options and i play better in opengl than software. so if there's something i can do .. some commands u let me know..
In the resolution i play the crosshair is too small and sometimes i get lost =P. Can my crosshair get bigger? or i need to upgrade a new one --(what i have to do to put a new one with the version i have or i have to change my version to put a new crosshair?
-Any tips you can give me about everythin would be aprecciated.
- if there's another actualization of quake 2 please let me know and where to download it.. (if u can say it step by step)
anotther thing. i dont know anythig about programming commands etc.

To make quake2 brighter, play with the vid_gamma, intensity and gl_modulate commands. Especially the last one is important. Set it to something like 10 or higher, and you'll see everything. Remember to type vid_restart for each time you change any of those 3 commands though!

Else, you can't make the crosshair bigger in regular quake2.exe without lowering your resolution. However, there are clients which will allow you to do so. The most popular these days, r1q2, will not, but it will make it possible to scale the whole hud (health/armor/ammo status ++).

Here are my settings for those, everything is pretty seeable for me.  Except in like some dark corners or under stairs on some maps, but I like it that way, looks more natural to me.

set vid_gamma "0.500000"
set intensity "2.0"
set gl_modulate "2.5"

I've attached the crosshair I use.  Unzip it and I believe all you have to do is put it in a folder called "pics" in your baseq2 folder.

as daelmun and senshi have suggested, one of the simplest thing you can do to make things more visible is typing this in your console (hit ~) while you're in game:

set gl_modulate 2

[enter]

vid_restart

[enter]

this will make everything quite a bit brighter so you aren't getting lost in the shadows...
you should only have to do it once since q2 will save your config when you quit.
if this isn't bright enough try a higher number up to 10...

also, you can have any crosshair you want (up to 3 different ones) with regular old quake 2 but they won't be any "bigger" just more visible. (you can get bright green ones and such) in the console type:

crosshair 1
crosshair 2
or
crosshair 3

to cycle thru the stock ones to see if any of them works better for you.

otherwise you can download or create new ones and all you'll have to do is put the files into this directory for the game to find them:

C:\quake2\baseq2\pics

they should be named ch1.pcx, ch2.pcx and ch3.pcx and they should be the same size as the originals...
you can find the original crosshair files in the "pics" folder in the pak0.pak file in your quake2\baseq2 directory.
Here is a program called "Wally" that will allow you to open the .pak files and edit the graphics all in one:
http://dervish.tastyspleen.net/files/wally_155b.exe

I hope some of this helps.

I went a step further and put them in an "autoexec.cfg" :)

Trust me, the one I attached is bigger than the stock ones, even with the regular q2 client :)

You might want to find a different client as there is no such thing as "Quake 3.21" - 3.21 is the version number given by default to any client compiled from the source id released, and if it still sports the 3.21 number, chances are it's something a little dodgy :). You might want to investigate R1Q2, EGL or AprQ2, 3 of the most popular clients used today.

wow. that it is.
 :bravo:

I didn't know you could use oversized ones. I figured it would display it relative to
a point on the image like the upper left hand corner, instead of centered.
the image itself is like 4:1 (compared to the original ones) and it still works...

It's great to learn something new every day.

I'd also recommend R1Q2 for most people, since it doesn't look all that much different than the original, and has vastly improved networking abilities and insanely quick map/tex/file downloads. Support for R1GL is a plus too, since a lot of us use nvidia vid cards... just remember to set the jump movement fix accordingly!
