I want to use the latest anticheat. However, I keep hearing people say how it's totally different from standard Q2. Some of the physics are different, graphics, everything.

I just don't want to deal with all the config problems that I think are going to come with this new client.

The cool thing about r1ch's new anticheat system, is it works with multiple clients. Right now, three clients support it: r1q2, EGL, and aprq2.

If you're looking to maintain the original Q2 feel and graphics, I'd recommend r1q2, and set cl_async "0" in your autoexec.cfg. It should be essentially identical to standard Q2 (except with faster map downloads.)

R1ch has been helping me with this. Basically, I feel like turning quake2 into a windows-only game would mark a black day in gaming history. I'm not going to set up a public server that refuses all non-windows clients. But apparently, it is possible to set the server up to require anticheat, but then manually make allowances for specific IPs for confirmed users of non-windows operating systems.

That's not a perfect solution, as non-windows users will be denied access to the server by default, until they contact me, and I add an allowance for their IP. (And if they have a really really dynamic IP, so that a simple subnet mask isn't sufficient, then they may have to contact me repeatedly, to filter their new IPs.)

As imperfect as that solution is, I'm willing to try it. All I can say is I'm not setting up a public server that excludes non-windows users.

I wish there was a complete command list packaged with the .zip though. I can't figure out the draw ping command.

Update:
Apparently there is a modified version of r1q2 that includes this feature. However, it doesn't appear to be in r1ch's newest version, which is unfortunate. I need that draw ping command since my connection spikes from time to time.

cl_drawping 1 basically just shows your ping onscreen as a number instead of a scrolling graph.

I'm not so sure about forcing the anticheat onto everyone (though it would be nice in a sense), but I think it should be forced for any leagues that are created. With limited people playing it wouldnt be too difficult to keep track of the two people that play quake 2 who actually use something other than windows. Just so everyone knows, r1q2 is about as close to vanilla q2 as you're going to get. It doesn't change quake 2 in any drastic ways. I'm not sure where Ghost heard that from, but it's obviously not a good thing if people believe that since they will be less inclined to actually try the client + anticheat. I didn't need to change anything in my config switching from aprq2 to r1q2. I know I could have used the anti cheat with aprq2, but I like r1q2 better anyway.

Personally I think it's pretty worthless to even bother with 64bit right now. I tried it out for awhile and it just didn't seem worth it. I'm sure once Vista is out it will make it a little more worth while.

Meh, everything I use is supported besides this anticheat program.... I have no problem with 64bit what so ever (besides anticheat). Vista will be out very soon FYI...

cheating isn't a problem unless your name is pyr3x/focus/blood/dinsum/granny etc. it's nice to have an anticheat that works for everyone but people will find ways to cry.

I'm not crying about people not using anticheat I just agree with paradise that it should be enforced for leagues that include some kind of prize and aren't just for fun. I guess it's ok for non-windows people to play without it, but I think every one on windows should be required. And in general I think people should use it only because it saves arguments and questionable people and it makes quake run a lot better anyway.
