How many Q2 servers can you put on one physical server?
« on: October 03, 2006, 01:11:53 PM »
Hey I am setting up some Q2 servers (Rocket Arena, LMCTF) and this is the first time I have done so.

My server has

Dual Pentium 3 -  2 processors - 756 mhz each
512 Megs of Ram

Does anyone know if this could handle Rocket Arena 16 player AND LMCTF 16 Player at the same time? Or do I need to put them on seperate servers? These servers will be private and on a LAN.

Thanks!

Hi,

That should be no problem.  You could possibly even run four 16-player servers on that box.

pretty sure these are private servers. even if they were public, why would you want the likes of you trashing his servers.

Thanks for getting back to me that is great news! Right now the school only has a 4 meg connection and 150 students :( But we may be getting a 20 to 100 meg connection in the next year. If we do I will put up a public LMCTF server for sure!

Just out of curiosity, do you need Linux for that?

Although I do like Linux, and use custom-compiled kernels for the tastyspleen.net servers, it is not a requirement to running quake2 servers.  A winnt-based kernel should work fine, and/or definitely a bsd-based/OS X kernel.

In all cases I'd recommend r1q2ded as the server software, as r1ch has tracked down and eliminated many bugs and security issues. (see: http://secur1ty.net/advisories/001-Multiple_Vulnerabilities_In_Quake_II_Server.txt )

What are the advantages of custom compiled kernals for q2 servers and are there directions somewhere on how to custom compile kernals for q2?

I would assume it would be dependant on the speed of the server I mean those Quad proc servers are most definetly going to be able to handle more then those single proc ones.

Building a custom kernel allows you to take advantage of special features of your hardware (enhanced instruction sets, special registers and clocks) and also weed out driver support for things you will not use (on a server, this means sound and video support, possibly USB, Parallel, and other interfaces too).  You also get to select your IO scheduling algorithm and preemption policy.  In other words, you get to build a streamlined kernel that is cut just for your box.  All of these things in combination can yield significant performance gains.

You will break your box the first few times you try to build a kernel.  Have a boot cd ready, know how to recover your stock kernel image and boot sector, and just be patient.
