Quake 2 Server Hosting

Can anyone tell me how I would go about setting up a public quake 2 server. I would like to start one. Should I have a hosting company provide it? If so who can you recommend and what service would I ask for? I have comcast cable, I think it's like 6 Mbps or something like that, would this be suitable for me to just set up a PC at home to host it? Or would this be a breach of their policy? Thanks again.

I dont know much about it,  but either way sounds good.  Seems like a hosting company would be more stable/faster/
as for hosting a server from home,  I dont think they care what you use your bandwidth for,  so long as the checks keep clearing.

lol.. A Pentium 133MHz makes a dandy 12 player server.  As for bandwidth, your cable line will hold up for about 8 players.  I run jdolan.dyndns.org:27910 on my cable line.  The box is a Celeron 533MHz, 64MB running GNU/Linux.

what are your intentions My Documents?  To just have a place to frag with some friends in a just for fun setting, or start a public server and hope to create a population at it?

For just a fun place to frag and have control of all settings, its easy to set one up at home.  A stable cable connection is more important then a hot machine, although both make it better.  i can help you set one up at home if you wish.  It would be a good place to practice and learn how the mods and configs and commands work.  A baseline setting would be to run r1q2 Dedicated Server, and q2admin.  OSP Tourney is about the most configureable mod, with easy to understand commands and many preset configs that work well right off the bat.

If you want to start a public server, hosting is the only way to go.  There are many, many options, with a great spread in cost and what they offer.

Its just something I am toying with, but thanks for all the info. Ideally I am looking to set up a public server close to me (my ping gets above 300 with comcast on tastyspleen at night and it upsets me), although setting up a server here at home is an option, I will need to find a pc first   . Then I have the problem of finding people to play on it, I see lots of empty servers out there. Thanks again
