I do not remember this... but... you're welcome, I guess.

I wish I knew a little more spanish. Just tonight I was trying to give some amigo a few tips on vanilla but he had no clue what I was saying. Kinda sucks that more of the vanilla regulars don't really have a clue how to play FFA better. And it's just small things they'd have to do to get a little better too. Here's the top three biggest things I see people not doing that they probably should:

1. When you're in a fight with someone, try to keep an eye on your health numbers. If you are taking any damage, try to pickup any health packs nearby in hopes of outlasting them. If YOU are picking them up, that means THEY AREN'T, and their health is not going up, only down. Also, keep an eye on your health even when you AREN'T in a fight. If it's below 100, immediately go find some health boxes and get it back to 100. Even better, try to get your health to at least 102, or 100 health and at least 2 armor. Reason being... point #2...

2. Keep in mind that the railgun deals 100 health damage, so if you've just spawned, try to pickup an armor, an armor shard, or a +2 health stimpack. That makes them have to hit you TWICE to frag you with a railgun.

3. Try to pick up all ammo boxes as you make your way around the map. This gives your opponents less ammo to use against you if they are nearby, and it also assures that you will have plenty of ammo for that weapon when you start attacking someone. Nothing more frustrating than almost fragging someone out and then "CLICK", you run out of ammo and THEY end up fragging YOU.

As far as point #1 goes, it's not ALWAYS mandatory that you keep your health at or above 100 at all times. If you're really trying to win the round, dicking around looking for health and trying to avoid people until you get it back to 100 is only going to waste time that you could be fighting and trying to accumulate more frags than the other players. Sometimes it doesn't take better aim than everyone else on the server to win at FFA, the name of the game is usually outlasting that first person you contact and collecting the frag first before they do. If you outlast that first guy you meet enough times, and you'll start seeing your board position improve.

Good tips Foc.  One thing I notice a LOT of novice-level players do that is a really bad habit is constantly jumping while firing ANY weapon.  This is an especially bad habit when someone is trying to hit you with the rail gun.  You have little to no control over your character after you hit that jump button and before you hit the ground.  Your trajectory is defined soon as you leave the ground.  For myself, if someone jumps and I'm trying to rail them, I feel like I should hit them 9 times out of 10, if not more, because they jumped.  However, if you're using the rocket launcher, it can occasionally be beneficial to jump before you fire, if you're going to be firing the rocket close to the ground near you.  In this case, jumping can actually lessen the splash damage you do to yourself from your own rocket.

I'm not saying to NEVER jump, but keep the jumps to a minimum, as many players will easily pick up the pattern that you're jumping with every shot, and intentionally wait for you to do this again to take their shot on you.  I think it's possible that many players are doing this in an attempt to imitate other players they see that are strafe jumping/running around the map, when they perhaps don't realize WHY those players are doing that.

jumping is fine for dodging :) and a big reason i personally do it in rail v rail fights is cause it lines up a shot easier for myself..

you just A. dont jump at a bad time (like if they havent fired a shot and are waiting for you to jump...), and B. dont jump like an idiot making large movements :) and dont do it too much lol

Yay, let's vaejack a topic about very basic FFA shit with TDM opinionism. :sarcastic:

Anyway, speaking of the vanilla and DM lower level players... yeah, I'd tend to agree that jumping too much when facing someone with a railgun is a horrible idea, but then again some of these less skilled players are so bad at movement that even THEY really have no idea what they're doing when they're jumping around trying to dodge you, and sometimes this actually makes them hard as a motherfucker to hit.  :lolsign: You play around with some of these awful players who just flail around shooting at walls half the time and you'll see what I mean. You get used to playing people who play a little smarter and you can almost anticipate where they are moving to. Then you play against these weirdos and they're bouncing all over the place, sometimes bouncing right over your head repeatedly, and it throws you for a loop. You happen upon these weirdos someplace and they can't strafe jump to get out of sight to save their life, and then you start to engage them and they end up ACCIDENTALLY strafe jumping in crazy triangles around you because all they're doing is madly punching keys and ripping the mouse back and forth like their hair is on fire.

Anyway, that has dick all to do with any tips for playing, just something I've observed several times and always makes me do a facepalm when it happens. :D

Hell no. Jumping frequently is a terrible idea because it makes your pathway predictable. Don't ever do it unless you try to be random against a good player, because they'll predict and react to your jumps and punish you hard for it.

As long as you time jumps during their reload, then you can do it frequent if you wish really. You can't just jump though, you have to do it off reaction. Which a good opposition is going to be playing off reaction too, so it's all very circumstantial. Usually I don't jump TOO much.

I asked you why, and you only responded with "everyone's a sinner." That's less "freely admitting your faults" and more of a minimization of them. Just saying.
