Instagib, Deathmatch, Duel and jailbreak
I think i will get a new pc on sunday(alienware m17x) so i'll install quake 2 at once!

i dont use skype as far as deathmatch goes, there is a few people floating around who can give ya good tips, but learning duel and tdm will help you improve in all the areas you mentioned

instagib really doesnt have a large skill set... unless you plan to play 1v1 instagib with some crazy good players it really is more or less just good aim few small tips that help with instagib FFA though like dont pick a fight with the person who has good dodging when there is much easier to hit targets right beside him :p and then there is just general accuracy tips like lining your shots up is easier than trying to flick shot everyone

duel is probably the most amazingly in depth way to play quake, so if you want to learn dueling you will still be learning years from now but everything you learn in 1v1/tdm is easily applicable to most other mods and so you see top tdm and 1v1 players usually always doing good in other game modes

as far as jailbreak goes... hm... ive seen it played once in an event but i dont think it has too strong of a player base to really get into it

anyway, best way to learn is to hop on and play you can ask for tips from the friendlier players usually right on the servers...

Ok, well then! a few last questions before i jump on the frag wagon

1. I play quake2 on my asus Eee pc(my main pc is broken!) so i would like to know if there is any console commands that can turn off gibs, muzzle flashes, explosions, etc?

2. I boicotted steam awhile ago so now i only got the Q2-kicker for playing.
Can anyone here help me set it up via teamviewer? Because it resets every friggen time!

If you're familiar with the console commands, go to c:/quake2/baseq2 and open the "autoexec.cfg" and save whatever settings you're wanting there in that file. There should be another file in that same folder called "config.cfg", which will have the same things in it, but the way Quake2 is made, the autoexec config always overrides the regular config.

If you AREN'T familiar with the console commands, or at least the ones you're wanting to use to get the game running a smooth as you'd like, then maybe it would help to list your system specs. Since Q2 is so old and simple, chances are you will be able to take advantage of all of the graphical features without losing any huge amounts of performance or frame rate.

If you're using a flat panel monitor and not one of those 90's style big fat 400 pounder tube monitors, then you'll want to use the setting:
gl_swapinterval "0"
I forget exactly what that does, but if the value is set to 1 and you're using a flat panel LCD display, it lags your mouse movement quite a bit, making quick snappy shots impossible.

gl_modulate is another setting that is damn near a MUST to change. The games default value is 1 and is always way too dark. Increasing it to anything from 3 to 9 is much better. It basically controls the intensity of of the map lighting. At 2 or 3, you'll still get plenty of shadows in areas that are intended to cast shadows, and at 9, there will be no shadows.

Personally I use cl_gun "1", which removes the in-hand weapons from the screen and fires from the center position. I don't like having the big fat gun blocking the view of 25% of my screen. I think of the in-hand gun as being a blind spot.

Well thanks for the help i opened up notepad++ and edited it!

But what i need is something that turns off the gun effects the gibbs the explosions etc, because i use my backup pc now and it cant run q2 with the lowest video quality!

Like I said, it would be helpful to know your system specs, like what kind of video card you're using, the size of the video memory on the card (8mb, 16mb, 32mb, 64mb, 128mb, etc), CPU speed (500mhz, 700mhz, 1ghz, etc), the type of mouse you're using and how it's connected (wireless infrared USB mouse, corded trackball mouse with ps/2 plug, etc).

Reason being, there might be a way to change something else without having to sacrifice those game features. Like I said, Quake2 is so old that when it came out, it was pretty common for most people to have 8mb video cards, and the game usually ran just fine with it. My old machine has a 8mb video card in it right now, and I remember that it would have choppy performance whenever I used a ps/2 mouse, but would run just fine with a USB mouse.

Thing is when i play vanilla deathmatch i remember where all the weapons and armor etc are, i just get killed before i get to them. Back in the day,  when q2 first came out i was a terror, now im just lunch.

easiest way of getting better is watching

1. watch good players play (spectator 1 on dm/vanilla, or stop by a tourney server when people are on there)

2. record demos of the games you play, and watch them afterwards to see what you did wrong
