The meta-game in the tdm scene has evolved somewhat over the years(things are a little bit faster and trickier now... ex: I can already have megahealth in less than 3 seconds after exiting water). Going for rail used to be 100% suicide against a good player, unless you had chain 200-300 bullets, mega, and near full armor. Now you can get away with it a little more, but it's still very risky against someone who knows how to punish it.

If you get caught by lower rl as they are leaving the rail, you might not have time to stop them from getting out of the water.  If you have okay health and weapons and can get there quick enough you can kill them in the tunnel, or exiting water.  And if you don't you're pretty much fucked.

For sounds, there are some subtle things to them, for instance the machine gun and ammo underground, and the lower rocket and ammo, makes the same sound while standing at center ledge; however the lower rl is fainter since it's further away.

If you here a loud ammo click, they may have grabbed the machine gun bullets and will be at the top of the lift in about 2 seconds.  Also you can only hear drops from certain places, like you have to be closeby to hear the person drop to lower rl.

At the spawn, you can even beat some spawns to mega from underground.

I usually skip the gun and ammo and head to arena,  if they are getting lower rl then you get the lift (and a glorious start uaually)
Get the gl and armor top of lift,  skip chain to get more armor then mega.  Should have enough to hold them at bay and grab chain.


If they AREN'T at lower rl as you approach lift I usually take it as a bad sign and go for the rl myself

I've learned a ton by watching better players on these broadcasts. Specifically the King of the Hill events. (which is why I've gone from absolute newb to actually placing in the newbie bracket)
