Make the VANILLA server VANILLA again or re-name it, ok?

I don't have a lot of time to waste screwing around with idiotic map and dmflag or gametype variety tweaking done by shut in dysfunctional idiots, schoolkids, or control freaks with nothing better to do than play quake for 16 hours a day when they aren't sleeping or fucking their dogs. That's why I started playing on (what was then) xquake.net's VANILLA server: It was straight up Quake2, both the mission levels and the DM maps in rotation, and I miss it.

It looks like there are about sixteen servers running now, of which about eleven never have any players on them. If the idea is to let mentally retarded dorkrod quake nerds screw around with the gameplay, set up a server with that in mind and return the Vanilla server to straight up vanilla play. OR, rename it, because as it is now it's false advertisement to call it such. I'm lucky to get a whole hour every other day to play and just want to enjoy a nice match -- And I also know for a fact that many of the regulars agree with me, though the outspoken nerd-headed pricks will no doubt have a problem with this request to turn the VANILLA server back into vanilla and will now flame away. That's what they do with their lives, pathetic as it is, and I don't have a problem with being flamed.

But I do have a problem with getting myself squared away for a half-hour match and finding out insteat it's time for the fucking pirate boat again, or the spacegun map again, or the idiot unlimited ammo with no weapons stay in the lab time again because some cheeze dicked teenage prick who needs a job and a haircut is BORED because he's been playing the same straight up vanilla quake for 12 hours straight since his sister went to work. Give them their own server & let them do what they want: I am BORING and just want to play quake with the regular maps, with the guns & ammo and stuff where it's supposed to be. You don't re-arrange golf courses just because a bunch of hammerheads decide the old fairways are getting boring.

there are indeed alot of little kids on vanilla, hence why alot of the other regulars around here never set foot on it (unless no one plays anywhere is, which is alot of the time the case) my point is, and like you siad yourself THERE ARE OTHER SERVERS HERE
that need players, even if it isnt vanilla. there are other options (many more then there should be IMO[IE: Delete inactive servers])

maybe vanilla mymap should be turned off cus of the abuse (which seems to still be a problem after quadz added things to provent this)
and keep it strictly vanilla

I actually thought he made good points, and was quite funny.  He's right.  Some of us work 9-10 hours a day, and can only squeeze in a half hour of Q2 here or there.  We don't follow all the drama of these forums, or #tastyspleen.  We don't have 1.5GB Q2 directories with every shit map ever made installed.  And we don't have the time to familiarize ourselves with all of the mutations, perversions and deviations from vanilla ffa that are present on the vanilla server.  Essentially, I think the vanilla server should be bone-stock.  base1 through boss2, and q2dm1-8, plus weapons stay due to the popularity of the server.

Saying that he's whining or being ungrateful is idiotic.  This is the "Suggestion Box" forum.  And you've all made requests for one thing or another here yourselves.

The charter for vanilla has always been "stock maps + request customs".

Here's the current list of custom maps available on vanilla.  It doesn't change very often.

As always, some people like certain maps, some don't.  That never changes.  We still hear complaints about fact2, and hangar2, for instance--and yet other players really like those maps.  We hear complaints about city1, but other players really like it.  We hear complaints about fact3, but some folks really like that one too.  Same with train.  Same with space, even!  And cool1, .... the list goes on.

So it's no surprise to me that some players like wtf!2, for instance, and some don't.  But I hardly think the maps listed above are really in the category of "every shit map ever made."

If you're referring to +ia, it can only be used once every four hours.  Since +ia is part of the game as designed by id software, I don't really see it as a mutation... It's a built-in dmflag.

well xquake itself was going to die regardless. The server owner was going to pull the plug,  the box itself was turning into a resource hog for one client named debbie sucking up the server resources on email     So to keep it alive and transparent the redirect was implemented as not to loose many players. It was a pretty good transistion considering the server lag xquake was going through. but it was dated hardware.  I think after time xquake/tastyspleen evolved due to player requests. while most players went one direction the older style servers  now just ports are seldmom visited.   Sure i miss the old xquake days but tastyspleen has evolved into quite a monster to support all these ports/mods for everyone.   Im sure if there were more resources and a demand more things could be implemented.

xquake died when all player traffic was redirected to vanilla... so noone really had a choice when all the custom maps and options were introduced, well unless you enjoy playing on an empty server.

In addition to what applejacks mentioned, historically speaking, we had been taking player requests for custom maps on xquake itself for the better part of a year, before the redirect occurred.

So at the actual moment of the redirect, nothing changed, except the maxclients was increased to 32.  Other than that, it was the exact same group of admins, logged into the same control room, with the same dmflags, taking the same requests for custom maps.  (In fact the server nickname in the admin control room still said "xquake", because I'd just redirected the admin software to tastyspleen.net:27912 without even shutting it down.)

In the months following the redirect, nothing really changed, as I recall, until the addition of mymap.  (Personally, I had wanted to try out the 'mymap' idea on xquake... but xquake died before mymap was ever implemented.)

So... it could certainly be argued that we never should have started taking player requests for custom maps on xquake in the first place... but it wasn't something that coincided with the redirect.

I agree with those who want to see a more stock vanilla server without all the non-votable mymap options... but everyone has an opinion I guess :p

My opinion is yours!
Leave mymap up to the kids and it's always maymap lab +ia.
I would play lab +ia, but the bfg is never there.
