Converting a demo to avi video
« on: July 26, 2006, 05:54:28 PM »
I am looking for a good way to convert a demo to an avi video.  I see kg2 separates it into frames but I dont see how you make an actual video out of this.  It may be prudent to only do a video at 30 or 60fps instead of 90, 120 or what we use in the game.  I tried some realtime desktop capture programs but they have lag problems when the computer can't keep up with the realtime capture/compression.  I was going to edit/splice from several demos.  I saw this done before.

Here are four options to get that done..
  • KeyGrip2, as you mentioned, can spit out screenshots.  You can use bmp2avi to make an avi.  Then, you can add sounds/music with Windows Movie Maker.  This is an easy, low-end way to make a movie.
  • I seem to remember that beefquake, a quake 2 client with some neat graphics, allows you to convert a demo (*.dm2 file)  to an avi with some options on framerate and resolution.
  • Last, you can use something like Fraps to take a movie.  The demo version allows 30 seconds of recording of a OpenGL or DirectX game.  License it for longer.  This includes sound and good quality video.  You can underlay music in Windows Movie Maker or another (probably better) tool.
  • If you really had to, you could record a digital movie by setting it up pointed at your computer.  The enjoyable part of this is to see where and how people play.

If you want to get good, search around on sites like http://www.own-age.com where people make, post, and review gaming movies.  There are a bunch of great Quake 2 gaming movies there I recommend everyone go see.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
