I can and do occasionally do the rocket+grenade jump. And  the bfg jump.Rocket+grenade jump is pretty self-explanitory.Drop nade, wait then rocket-jump off the grenade as its blowing up.
Bfg-jump is harder and more dangerous.Press fire and as the bfg is winding up get running, and when its about to fire point down and hit jump.YOU MUST HIT JUMP before it goes off, or you will be killed.Gotta time it so it goes off right as your jumping.Ive made it to a few outta reach places like that before. :)

Ah, advanced weaponjumps are the sweetest and most spectacular jumps in the game in my eyes. You're right in the way you explain the grenade + rocketjumps. And the bfg jump while not as usefull, it is spectacular too.

But also notice how you can propell yourself even higher into the air by shooting a rocket at the wall as you go up, this only helps when you're performing a jump that brings you higher into the air than just a standard rocketjump (for instance when rocketjumping as you doublejump, or as m^tster mentioned the grenade+rocketjump). By doing this you can actually jump up to the roof from the ssg window on q2dm1, if you manage to doublejump standing by the window as you rocketjump (quite hard actually) and firing an additional rocket into the wall making the splashdamage propelling you all the way to the top of the roof. If you are a fan of rocketjumps I must recommend the dm1-weapon.dm2 part of my q2dm1-jump demo. There are some really nice jumps there if I may say so (yes, I may ;)) http://q2scene.net/ds/index.php?op=dd1&id=2065

Other jumps with nades are midair handgrenade jumps. Now these jumps are fairly hard to do to begin with, but the idea is pretty easy. If you throw the grenade just as it explodes, the explosion will give you a speed boost. If timed right, and thrown at the right place, you can actually jump from the gl to the megaentrance on q2dm1 in one jump, by throwing a nade looking straight down in the air. The technice requires some practice to perfect, but it is actually not that hard.

And finally the beauty of slow rockets and the physics in quake2, the double rocketjump. It is pretty much based on the idea that rockets travel in a fixed speed while the physics of the players are different, meanig they accelerate as they fall (just as it should be). This fact makes it possible to actually fire a rocket as you fall and actually land on the ground before the rocket does. Some of you may have noticed that at times, either when firing a rocket when falling and getting killed by it, or when speedjumping and actually catching their own rockets (yeah, you can actually run faster than a rocket). Well, the idea is that if you fall high enough, you can fire a rocket as you start the fall so you land just a .1 second or more before the rocket does, and as the rocket is about to explode, perform a standard rocketjump on the rocket you already fired. With the right timing it will make you jump ridiculously high :) Not as usefull in games, but it is nice for showoff :P

Always something to keep you occupied :)

Dr_Cornholio: as far as I recall quad damage does not affect the BFG, so a quadded BFG jump is just a simple BFG jump. For some serious crazy jumping, invulnerability + quad + rocketjump = win! :)

Hey what can I say - I'm a Quake 3 player and in Q3 quad affects the BFG :). Although, Q3's BFG sucks compared to Quake 2's!

Hmm Ill have to try that double rocket jump!Looks fun. What Im wondering is how some people have figured out how to..now this my sound weird...fire a rocket like they were going to RJ but it doesnt go off right away...and they fire a second rocket..and then they jump so in affect its a double rocket jump. How the heck do they do that? And all you see is them firing once...twice..then they go flying...is that a cheat of some kind?

I assume you aren't talking about grenade + rocketjump, so I think you're talking about the super rocketjump.

Well, it is considered a cheat in jumpmod at least, the usefullness of it in deathmatch is very limited so I'm not sure whether it is looked on a cheat there but I wouldn't recommend using it. It's a script that makes you fire a rocket, then sets the cl_maxfps to 0 then fire another one while being "lagged" so both rockets come out at once. It's fun to try on your own host though, and not really usefull in game but I'll give it to you just to show how it's done:

// Super rocket jump
alias LW0 "wait;wait;wait;wait;wait"
alias LW1 "LW0;LW0;LW0;LW0;LW0;LW0"
alias LW2 "LW1;LW1;LW1;LW1;LW1;LW1"
alias LW3 "LW2;LW2;LW2;LW2;LW2;LW2"
alias +freeze "set clmfps1 $cl_maxfps;set cl_maxfps 0"
alias -freeze "set cl_maxfps $clmfps1"
alias +ldown "set origpspeed $cl_pitchspeed;set cl_pitchspeed 9999;+lookdown"
alias -ldown "set cl_pitchspeed $origpspeed;-lookdown"
alias srj "+ldown;lw0;+attack;+moveup;lw0;+freeze;lw3;-freeze;-ldown;-attack;-moveup"
bind ALT srj

Save the above in your config or save it in a seperate config and exec that inside the game. Get the rockelauncher and stand in the arena at q2dm1 and press the alt-key alt, if it doesnt work first time try pressing it again while looking straight down :) May not work in r1q2, but works in standard quake2.exe and works in nocheat if you look straight down when hitting alt.

Enjoy the flight! :)

Same, believe r1ch put in a cap for how low the cl_maxfps could get, or maybe something else. I dunno. Doesn't matter, just try it in original quake2.exe for a few cheap thrills and move on to other fancy jumps ;) Possibly more usefull in ra2 though, where selfdamage is off.

Originally people would do this by letting their harddrive spin down, then hitting screenshot.. the game will pause while the harddrive spins back up.. givng you time to fire the second rocket which gets queued up and sent to the server at the same time.

I consider this an unsportsman-like exploit.  Just interesting.

Yeah, actually heard about similar ways of doing it, and can't remember exactly other ways of doing it but either by doing a timerfresh or vid_restart or something similar should do the trick. And I agree with you, it's unsportmansl-like exploit, but nonetheless a fascinating exploit and bit funny to try it on your own host.

i cant imagin anyone doing anything like that, just to rocket jump. i have a similer setup for the super rocket jump
and i hardly use it at all (since r1q2 hates it) it was fun on heat.net with the self damage off :) those were the days
