Sticky: Some jumpdemos

Hey there, just thought I'd give some links to some jump-demos. At least when I started playing this game the thing that always amazed me was people who could pull out some crazy jumps. Maybe watching some trickjumps will make some players realize there are still things to learn in this game.
Me being the jumpfreak I am, I've alway been fascinated by the trickjumps in quake2, and there are quite a few of them luckily. Since I write this thread, I might as well give links to the demos I've made.
daelmun's jumps on Q2DM1 - The edge:
My favourite jump map ever, and also happens to be the most played map in quake2 tdm. This is a demo I made a close to 2 years ago, spent a lot of time making it, not only the jumping but also the editing. I was offline at the time, and was a newbie at using keygrip2 and had to learn it all from scratch without any help at all. To begin with I just randomly pasted the jump-clip after eachothers as I made new jumps (which I did annoyingly often, I always thought I'd nailed the last one, but I kept trying new ones), only way I sorted them was the location water/mega/arena/shotgunroom. It was a complete mess and totally unwatchable for anyone but me, so when it was almost done, I decided to rearrange the order of every jump. Quite a job, as you will realize when watching it, as

How to view a quake2 demo
It's really easy, luckily. Only thing you need to be sure of is that the demo you want to watch (a demo has the .dm2-extension) is in the quake2\baseq2\demos-folder. If that folder does not exist, just create one. Then, start up quake2, type in console: map demoname.dm2. Where demoname.dm2 is the name of the demofile you wish to view.
For instance, in order to watch the grom_dm3 jumps I put up here, just unzip the files to the quake2\baseq2\demos folder. Then start up quake2, press the console key if console is not down already. Then write:
map gromdm3-jumps.dm2
The same procedure should work for every demo. Be sure you have the map though, if you downloaded the map from a server, be sure to move it from the gamemod\maps folder to the baseq2\maps folder.
Also remember that the universal windows paste shortcut works in the quake2 console as well. So just copy the name of the demo, and write "map " and do a ctrl+v in the console. Then you don't need to memorize long demo names
For lazy people (like me)
If you're lazy like me, you don't even bother unzipping demos to the demos folder at all. No way, I just open the zip in winzip and let an external demoviewing program take care of the rest.
Demoplayer 2.40:
http://filesource.quakeclans.org/files/utilities/demoplayer24.zip
It's a great program, it will run every .dm2 file in quake2 by just doubleclicking on the file. Right out of the zip. It also runs demos from other weird mods as ra2 (as if you ever want to see those demos
). Anyway, if you plan on watching some demos more often, I recommend using demoplayer or other similar programs. It's worth it.
Where to find quake demos
To find quake2 demos, there are mainly 3 sites active:
http://www.q2players.org/demos.php
<- demos from the NA tdm scene
http://www.challenge-tv.com/index.php?mode=demos&game=5
<- demos form mainly the NA tdm scene, older demos from before q2players started hosting demos. Also demos from other games.
http://q2scene.net/ds
<- demos from the European q2 scene. This scene is a lot more active, allthough the demos are not as frequent, they are usually of higher quality. Check out players like purri/damiah/provi/lucas/assasin/scooby/gerdt and so on and so on. Be warned, the hosting is pretty bad, so downloading is not always perfect with IE, but it should work ok.

I've never seen that jump on Q2DM5. The one by rocket launcher across the gap, from spawn/rockets/health, to the shotgun shells. I tried doing that over and over and over, but I always just barely don't have enough distance. Do you adjust your FPS for any trick jumps? Or what FPS do you use for your jumps if it's always the same FPS?

Hey.... I've done the speed jump from the megahealth to red armor before...
I cut to the right instead of going over the stairs though
Anyhow, nice demo, really like the jumps from the rl to red armor... never thought of that! I'm gonna enjoy the other demos I'm sure
Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I use cl_maxfps 90 all the time. But in that big ass dm1 demo there are some occasions where I use cl_maxfps 31 or something when jumping from box by yellow armor-grenade to the light by megahealth, and also cl_maxfps 27 in the doublejump off the small step by water to the shards.
There are some jumps that gets easier with different fps though, mostly doublejumps/ladderjumps and most annoyingly triple jumps (doublejump off a ledge while being in the air). As for speed and circlestrafe jumps, any normal fps will do just fine, unless you start sliding (getting glued to the floor when trying to speedjump). And some jumps can only be done with high fps 100+, like jumping the crates on q2dm8.
I play with cl_maxfps 90 all the time, except on q2dm8 and ptrip where I use 120 to be able to do the crate jumps. When I happen to play jumpmod it's a total different story, there I have binds changing the fps, but that's a different ballgame really.
And that jump across the gap by rl on q2dm5 is really hard. It really is
So if you get it once you should be really happy, I have only done it once myself. Haven't tried it much after I did it though, cause trying to replicate really hard jumps isn't as fun as trying to make new jumps. Need the optimal 2 jumps speed to make it across.

To me, the first file, when I download and open the demo zip on the new page, I get:
EDIT: I tried this about 5 times. No luck. I'm gonna clear my temporary internet files and see if that helps...
EDIT 2: YAAAAY!! It worked! The first time I tried, it said it was 1.37 MB, but it stopped and said Download Complete, 400-and-something KB... twisted... oh well you can kind of forget about this post. If I could, I would delete it. But I'm not a s00per-d00per-uber-admin.

Well, it's the site that is crappy for downloading with IE (internet explorer), it works perfectly with other web browsers I believe (at least opera), but with IE the download is often incomplete, causing the zip to be damaged. Think you can use some download accelerator to make it easier with IE too, but not sure. At least with bigger files it is a pain in the ass.
But there is ways around it:
http://q2scene.net/ds/index.php?op=com&id=501
for explaination on how to do it the hard way.

Here's a jump demo i made a while ago on the longest three feet.... I was trying to do a circuit and hit every jump pad at least once before ending up in the same spot. Kinda fun...

Hehe, well done crazed, love those rampjumps. I remember seeing some impressive jumping on that map in some q3 movie, could probably be done in this version too, by combining ramp and rocketjumps and doublerocketjumps etc
Could be fun trying some of that stuff out.
Anyway, did some jumping on the same map a while back, and found some not so usefull jumps. The one where I jump from the ramp but stop mid air to walk back is done with cl_maxfps 31 or something, it's not really a trickjump, more an fps exploit but looks hilarious

Hey dael!
You have some nice jumps there
I like those speed jumps across the most, although that midair one is pretty funny. I had no idea something like that was possible...
Umm... I wanted to ask you if you could make it from the rail ramp to one of the ramps by the rocket launchers. It seems possible because if you don't strafe or turn at all you land just a little hop away from them, but as much as I tried I could barely make it any closer. Is there an upper speed limit that you can't break?
